The football world was left baffled after Italian superstar Leonardo Bonnuci was stopped from entering the pitch after a steward thought he was a fan in Italy's dramatic victory over Spain in the Euro 2020 semi-final.

Italy won the most dramatic of semi-final clashes against Spain after Jorginho stepped up in the penalty shootout to send his team to the Euro 2020 final where the winner of England or Denmark awaits.

Jorginho's 'ice cold' penalty sent Italian fans at Wembley and around the world into rapture as supporters lost their minds in joy.

Italian defender Andrea Bonucci was one of the best performers during the match and showed his appreciation for the supporters at Wembley as he charged over and celebrated with the diehard fans.

But in a bizarre moment, when Bonucci went to re-enter the pitch after celebrating near the advertising board, a steward grabbed him.

The steward appeared to believe Bonucci was a fan trying to enter the pitch, which was understandable considering the pandemonium in the stadium.

But after Bonucci appeared shocked at the initial denial the pair quickly shared a laugh and the Italian hugged the steward after the harmless mistake.

Fans lost their mind over the bizarre moment, which was captured on camera.

Touching moment during Euro 2020 semi-final

Extra-time was filled with dramatic moments, but the inevitable occurred as both Italy and Spain were level after 120 minutes of pulsating football.

What is considered the crucible of pressure in football, penalties would decide who would advance to the Euro 2020 final.

Two stars, Italian captain Giorgio Chiellini and interim captain Jordi Alba, were called up to decide at which end (in front of which fan base) the penalties would take place and who would go first.

But in heartwarming scenes, Chiellini appeared to drop any harboured nerves and was seen joking around with rival interim captain Alba.

Chiellini was seen jokingly punching Alba, hugging him and sharing a laugh.

Yet many fans around the world pointed out the scenes showed the essence of football and what the 'beautiful' game is all about.
