Manchester City's Erling Haaland has left football fans stunned after scoring five goals in his team's demolition of RB Leipzig in the Champions League round of 16 second leg. City returned home with the tie level at 1-1 and the match looked like it could be another rollercoaster in the opening stages.

However, City took their game to the next level after scoring in the 22nd minute when Haaland slotted home from the penalty spot from a dubious penalty decision. And the 22-year-old Norwegian never looked back as he went onto score five goals in a Champions League knockout match, which equals Lionel Messi and Luiz Adriano's previous record.

City finished 7-0 winners with Ilkay Gundogay and Kevin De Bruyne also netting with the last kick of the game. While Halaand's record is astonishing, the manner in which he scored the goals also left football fans stunned.

Haaland had scored his fifth goal in the 52nd minute and was sensationally denied going for the record double hat-trick when he was substituted after 63 minutes. But his goal records with Borussia Dortmund and now City remain staggering.

Haaland became the fastest player to reach 30 goals in the competition. At 22 years, 236 days old, he is also the youngest player to reach that landmark, surpassing Kylian Mbappe, who was 22 years, 352 days when he scored his 30th Champions League goal.

The bustling Norwegian has also scored more hat-tricks then legends Ronaldo Nazario, Thierry Henry and Wayne Rooney. The football world was in awe of City's result and Haaland's feat in the Champions League knockout tie.

Manchester City make Champions League statement

Haaland spoke to BT Sport after the game and admitted it was a huge statement from City in the Champions League. "It's an amazing feeling," he said.

"First of all, to make a statement in this tournament in the Champions League. We gave a statement that we can score seven goals."

Haaland admitted he asked coach Pep Guardiola why he didn't stay on the pitch in an attempt to break the record after he was substituted after 63 minutes. But after the match, Haaland said he was hungry for more goals.

"In the first half I could have scored more," Haaland said speaking to BT Sport. "In my mind, I always have to look for the next and try to reach more. To stay hungry. Maybe someone if they scored five goals would be happy, but you have to want more."

Another talking point in the match was the first penalty. City was awarded a penalty when the ball struck a hand at point blank range. Fans were left baffled over the handball rule with greats such as Alan Shearer and Mats Hummels blasting the decision.

In the night's other match, FC Porto were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Inter Milan meaning the Italian club progressed to the last eight 1-0 on aggregate. Porto defender Pepe was sent off late in the game as tensions boiled over.
