England savaged over dodgy move after historic Test cricket victory over India

England wicketkeeper Ben Foakes has embraced his inner Alex Carey after attempting a cheeky stumping at a pivotal point in England's Test victory over India. The move drew harsh criticism online and rekindled the spirit of cricket debate that clouded the 2023 Ashes series after Aussie keeper Carey threw down Jonny Bairstow's stumps after he left his crease before the ball was dead.

In the incident in October, Bairstow thought the over had been called and began to walk down the pitch to talk with Ben Stokes. But Carey anticipated the Englishman leaving his crease prematurely and threw the ball at the stumps as soon as he received it. The ball then crashed into the wicket as Bairstow had just left his crease and he was given out.

In the aftermath, Bairstow and his teammates were irate at the Aussie's move, despite the majority of the cricket world in agreeance that it was completely legal. But the English argued it wasn't in the spirit of the game and it led to Aussie players being abused in the famous 'Long Room' at Lord's. Carey and his family also became the target of social media trolls.

England captain Ben Stokes at the time said: "Would I want to win a game in that manner? The answer is no." But those words almost came back to bite him after Foakes knocked the bails off the stumps after Indian quick Jasprit Bumrah jumped in the air in frustration after missing a pull shot.

The English keeper caught the ball and held it close to the bails, waiting for Bumrah's feet to leave the ground slightly. As they did he whipped the bails off but he was a split second too late with replays showing the Indian's back foot slightly on the pitch and inside the crease. Despite the act not ending in a wicket, social media slammed England for being hypocrites after Foakes' attempted stumping.

Tom Hartley stars on debut for England

Debutant Tom Hartley starred for England, claiming an incredible seven wickets to help the tourists down India in the first Test at Hyderabad. Earlier in the match Hartley's first ball as a Test cricketer was launched for six.

But he regrouped and bounced back on Sunday with figures of 7-62 in the fourth innings, sealing a dramatic 28-run England victory. The 24-year-old was relatively unknown before the Test but left a hero after he got the last wicket in the final over of the fourth day. England looked on course for an emphatic defeat after trailing by 190 runs at the end of the first innings but some determined batting and crafty bowling saw them condemn India to only their fourth home defeat in over a decade.

After the match, Hartley said the moment hadn't sunk in yet but praised his captain and coaches for rallying around him after a difficult start. "It's unbelievable, it's not going to sink in for a while I think. I'm over the moon, to be honest," Hartley said.

"It was really tough out there, it didn't spin quite as much as we thought (in the first innings) but testament to Stokesy (captain Ben Stokes), Baz (coach Brendon McCullum) and the coaches, they really got around me and I lost no confidence really."
