EFL Preview: Farewell for Eustace at Blackburn?

The EFL teams provided plenty of spectacle at the weekend in the FA Cup, firing in incredulous goals and knocking out Premier League opponents - but it's time to get back to league business.

A team who did not have a good weekend and could see an even worse week ahead are Blackburn Rovers.

Blackburn were unable to strike back against Wolves for a 2-0 FA Cup defeat on Sunday, are set to face a tough challenge against West Bromwich Albion in the week and may even lose boss John Eustace.

Derby have made an approach to Eustace for their vacant managerial position and if Rovers do lose their head coach to a fellow Championship club, well, there are not many times worse than this to do so.

Nervous times for Rovers

Blackburn make the trip to their neighbours in the table West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday (20:00 GMT), who are also now under the guidance of a familiar face to Rovers fans in former manager Tony Mowbray.

Rovers have lost five of their past six games in all competitions but remain promotion hopefuls - though the loss of the boss who put them into the top six may prove to be a major turning point.

"When I came here, we were on the way down but now we've been on the way up," Eustace told BBC Radio Lancashire after Rovers' FA Cup loss against Wolves.

"We've had some disappointing results. It's something we will have to discuss with the owners and see what happens."

Rams look to echo Rowett magic

Derby meanwhile ended their seven league match league losing streak with a draw against Norwich City on Saturday, after sacking boss Paul Warne last week.

The U's head to Pride Park on Tuesday (19:45 GMT) buoyant under new boss Gary Rowett.

Oxford have lost only once since Rowett took over from Des Buckingham in December - a sacking that caused upset among fans at the time - and that was to an in-form Burnley side vying for the title.

However, a new set of eyes in the dugout hasn't always panned out - just ask Luton Town.

The Hatters are yet to register a win under new boss Matt Bloomfield and will have to defeat promotion chasers Sunderland on Wednesday (19:45 GMT) if they are to claw their way out of the bottom three.

Latte Lath-less Boro face challenging task

Sheffield United host seventh placed Middlesbrough on Wednesday (20:00 GMT) in a bid to take top spot in the Championship.

It will be the third time in their past four league games that Boro have had to face a promotion-contending team, coming out victorious against West Bromwich Albion but faltering to Sunderland in a close 3-2 loss.

It will also be the first opportunity to see how the Teeside club copes without top scorer Emmanuel Latte Lath, who headed Stateside during the transfer window.

A win here could see Sheffield United eek into top spot if Leeds fail to take a point against a stumbling Watford.

Though should the Blades not gain any ground, Burnley are primed to take over their automatic promotion spot if the Clarets claim victory against relegation-threatened Hull City.

Can Donley be Orient's man yet again?

You will find few who made more of a splash than Leyton Orient's Donley on the weekend.

His spectacular long range effort caught Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega off his line and off-guard during their FA Cup match, with the number two keeper eventually being awarded an own goal after the shot ricocheted off the bar onto his back and into the net.

"I just have to congratulate the incredible goal; incredible kick, so quality," Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola told the Football Daily podcast.

"The moment the ball was flying, I said uh-oh. It's great to do something special."

While Orient went on to lose the match with the reigning Premier League champions 2-1, they next host Mansfield Town on Tuesday (19:45 GMT) in League One.

It is the same first three letters but a much less daunting prospect given that the Stags are on a five league match losing streak.

Can Leyton Orient manufacture a way into the play-off spots?

Cambridge got the Blues

If we want to reflect on great FA Cup goals, Donley isn't the only name in the hat this weekend.

Birmingham City's Tomoki Iwata's thunderous strike on the run rattled more than the back of the net, even though the League One side were eventually bested by the Magpies.

League leaders Birmingham welcome basement side Cambridge United on Tuesday (19:45 GMT) as the U's try and pull themselves out of the drop zone.

Beating the West Midlands side is going to take something special from Cambridge though, with Blues unbeaten across their past 13 league games and the U's with just five wins to their name all season.

Some good news for Cambridge is that they are not the only team at the bottom facing a mountainous task.

Struggling 19th-placed Bristol Rovers have the unenviable honour of hosting fourth placed Stockport County, a team seemingly undeterred by the loss of their top scorer Louie Barry and on a five match winning streak.

While 20th placed Peterborough head to Charlton Athletic, with the London side looking to keep their play-off spot.

Notts look to shorten the gap

Walsall fans have been sitting comfortably at the top for a while now, but without a win in four league games and missing top scorer Nathan Lowe, they might be starting to get nervous.

Six points separate them from second placed Notts County, while they are 11 points clear of Crewe Alexandra in eighth.

The Saddlers' automatic promotion spot is by no means guaranteed - though they will have a chance to stop the rot against a team also going through a rough spell.

Gillingham haven't won a game since mid-December and, despite a strong start to the season, are all the way back in 19th place.

The Gills visit Bescot Stadium on Tuesday (19:45 GMT) while Walsall's closest competitors, Notts, close out the week on Thursday (20:00 GMT) away at sixth-placed Port Vale.

Vale are unbeaten in the league in 2025 and Notts haven't lost since their New Year's Day defeat at the hands of the league leaders.
