Disgraced Melbourne Storm boss weighs in on titles

Former Melbourne Storm CEO Brian Waldron has joined a number of prominent voices calling on the NRL to reinstate the club’s stripped 2007 and 2009 premierships.

Waldron, who was famously dubbed ‘chief rat’ for his role in the Storm’s salary cap breaches which ultimately cost them two premierships, said the league was too hasty in doling out punishment.

Speaking on Macquarie Sports Radio, Waldron claimed he had never spoken to the NRL about the clubs’ financial records.

In 48 hours, they determined some findings on what they thought – the game was conflicted,” he said on Tuesday.

“And then they said: ‘We’ve now really seen the truth of what took place’.

“They never spoke to one official involved at the time. I was never spoken to. Peter O’Sullivan was never spoken to.

“So they put forward a large document that in some ways was correct but in other ways was incredibly incorrect and wrong.”

Waldron sensationally went on to claim then league CEO David Gallop had “creatively” put together the numbers ultimately used to find the club guilty of numerous salary cap breaches.

“I believe it’s a long way off. I’ve got the data still…I kept all the records at the time. I’ve got it all,” Waldron said.

“They think they know the truth but they don’t.

“I understand why the Storm have grievances and they have got the right.”

Waldron’s statements come in the wake of Storm captain Cameron Smith suggesting the club’s premierships should be reinstated in the wake of the Cronulla Sharks’ salary cap fiasco.

Smith drew the ire of Sharks great Paul Gallen after pointing out the Sharks had retained their premiership in the wake of the scandal.

Current Melbourne Storm CEO Dave Donaghy has also thrown his support behind Smith.
