Heartbreaking images have emerged out of Argentina, where Diego Maradona's boyhood club Boca Juniors paid a wonderful tribute to the footballing legend.

Since news spread of his tragic passing last week, the world has been paying their respects to a genius of the sport that many consider to be the greatest footballer of all time.

INCREDIBLE: Lionel Messi's perfect tribute to Maradona

Maradona passed away in his home on the outskirts of Argentina's capital Buenos Aires, after dying of cardiac arrest at the age of 60.

Argentina's president declared three days of mourning for the legendary figure, before his body was laid to rest next to his parents.

Among the countless tributes to the 1986 World Cup winner was a special moment in Buenos Aires on Sunday, when two of his former clubs - Boca Juniors and Newell's Old Boys - met in the Argentine Primera Division.

Hosts Boca wore special strips which bore Maradona's name on the back - winning the match 2-0 against their rivals.

After scoring the opening goal, Edwin Cardona led his team in a touching tribute to the national icon, running over to the sideline with his teammates to applaud Maradona's daughter Dalma - who was sitting in her famous father's box.

The wonderful gesture moved Dalma to tears, with the grief-stricken daughter of the football great breaking down as she watched on.

Maradona first represented Boca between 1981 and 1982, before returning to his boyhood club for a second stint between 1995 until 1997.

He also played for Newell’s Old Boys from 1993 to 1994, making a combined 75 appearances for both clubs.

Documents seized from Maradona’s doctor

The moving tribute to Maradona came after police raided the house of the Argentinian's doctor - seizing medical documents as part of their investigation into his death.

Maradona died aged 60 on Wednesday of a heart attack in a house outside Buenos Aires where he had been recovering from a brain operation, with his burial taking place the next day.

Doctor Leopoldo Luque says he did the best he could for the 1986 World Cup winner and is not responsible for his death, after prosecutors ordered the search of his home.

"My family shouldn't have to suffer because of this. I can't read any of the stuff being written about me because I'm too sad as my friend has died," Luque said.

"I was at his funeral and wake and people I didn't know were asking me why I wasn't with him - I couldn't believe it. I'm not responsible.

"I would like him to still be here. He wanted to live. I tried to take him places but he didn't want to go. He missed his parents a lot.

"His life changed and then he left us. It's very unfair but I would go back and do it all again.

"Police coming to my house ... I'm not to blame for anything, I'm proud of what I did. They arrived unexpectedly but I gave them everything they asked for."

The prosecutor's office did not provide any information on what prompted the investigation.

In later years, Maradona struggled with substance abuse issues.

"Diego was tired, tired of being 'Maradona'", Luque said.

Maradona's lawyer Matias Moria said on Thursday he would ask for a full investigation of the circumstances of the football legend's death, criticising what he said was a slow response by emergency services.

"The ambulance took more than half an hour to arrive, which was a criminal idiocy," Matias said in a Twitter post.
