David Warner in ugly exchange with Rashid Khan amid Cricket World Cup drama

David Warner has involved in an angry altercation with Rashid Khan amid Australia's miraculous win over Afghanistan at the Cricket World Cup. Glenn Maxwell blasted an incredible 201 not out to get Australia home after they seemed long odds at 7-91 while chasing 293.

Warner (18), Travis Head (0), Mitch Marsh (24), Marnus Labuschagne (14), Josh Inglis (0) and Marcus Stoinis (6) all failed to fire as Afghanistan put themselves on the brink of a famous victory. But Maxwell produced one of the greatest innings in ODI history to get Australia home with three overs remaining, blasting 10 sixes and 21 fours.

It eclipsed Shane Watson's 186 as the highest score by an Australian in a one-day international, and was just the third double century in World Cup history. But Maxwell's epic knock papered over the cracks of another Aussie collapse and saved his side from an embarrassing fate.

Amid the drama, Warner was involved in ugly scenes with Rashid after the Afghanistan star had some words for the Aussie batter. Warner was talking to Marsh at the end of an over when he appeared to take ecxeption to something said by Rashid.

Warner aborted his conversation with Marsh to take aim at Rashid, and appeared quite agitated as he gave his opponent a piece of his mind. An Afghanistan reserve player attempted to step in and break up the confrontation, but the pair kept jawing at each other.

TV commentator Natalie Germanos said she was surprised by the fiery scenes considering Warner and Rashid have played together in the IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad. But Ricky Ponting, who coached Warner at the Mumbai Indians, was silent in response to Germanos' comments.

Maxwell's knock secured Australia's berth in the semi-finals and set up a final-four clash with South Africa next week. Pat Cummins, who made 12 off 68 balls at the other end, described Maxwell's knock as the best in ODI history.

"I think that's the greatest ODI innings," Cummins said after combining with Maxwell for a 202-run eighth-wicket stand. "It's the best I've ever seen, probably the greatest ODI innings ever.

"We're just chatting about it, all the players, and we've decided it's one of those days where you just go 'I was there in the stadium the day Glenn Maxwell chased down that total by himself'. It's just a one-man show. I'm up the other end and don't see any gaps in the field, don't see where I'm going to score a boundary - and yet it seems like every time he sees that, it still just runs away for four. It looks so easy. He still can't move, and yet still manages to hit a six over the third man with a reverse – he's a freak."

Maxwell battled a back issue and was cramping badly towards the end of the innings. He was basically on one leg while blasting six after six to secure the victory.

"I feel shocking," he said afterwards. "It was quite hot when we were fielding, I haven't done a whole lot of high intensity exercise in the heat. I was lucky to stick it out until the end."
