David Peever falls on sword as Cricket Australia chairman

Cricket Australia chairman David Peever has vacated his post after coming under fire in recent days.

Peever was unanimously re-elected at CA’s annual general meeting (AGM) last Friday, at which point state associations were yet to read The Ethics Centre’s scathing report.

But following the release of the damning cultural review, combined with a host of disgruntled state administrators, the call for his axing was made on Thursday morning.

The steps to oust Peever from his position required a state to take the highly-unusual step of calling an extraordinary general meeting, then two thirds of state delegates needed to vote in favour of removing him – and it seems that has now occurred:

It is believed some of the state big-wigs were angered by the report’s contents but also the fact that they weren’t privy to them prior to the AGM.

There has been calls for long-serving board member Mark Taylor to replace Peever as chairman but this wouldn’t be a fait accompli, should the former Rio Tinto Australia boss vacate his post.

The Cricket Australia board met on Thursday afternoon by phone hook-up to ratify Peever’s resignation, and released a statement shortly after:

“Cricket Australia has today confirmed that Mr David Peever has announced his resignation as Chairman of the Board of Cricket Australia, effective immediately.”

Earl Eddings, who was appointed CA’s deputy chairman and heir apparent at last week’s annual general meeting (AGM), will serve as interim chairman.
