Dan Hurley is not only the coach of one of the most competitive college basketball programs in the country, but he's also a proud husband and father.

The University of Connecticut head coach has been married to his wife Andrea Hurley since 1997, and the pair have two children. They welcomed their first son, Danny Hurley, in 1999 followed by their second son, Andrew Hurley, in 2002.

Both of Dan’s sons followed in his footsteps, with Danny attending his father's alma mater Seton Hall University and Andrew playing basketball at UConn under his dad’s coaching.

“I don’t have a lot of friends, to be honest. Andrea and my boys are who I have, and they’re my world,” Dan told FOX Sports in January 2023.

While Andrea admits that she has “zero interest in the game,” she is also her husband’s biggest supporter and acts as a second mom to UConn’s young athletes, even baking cupcakes for their birthdays.

“The players are honestly my favorite part,” she told the New York Post in March 2021. “They’re other people’s kids, and they are away from home, so they need to know that someone is there for them.”

In April 2024, UConn won their second consecutive March Madness championship with Dan as their coach.

From meeting his wife in college to coaching his son at UConn, here’s everything to know about Dan Hurley’s wife and children.

When Dan met Andrea while they were both students at Seton Hall, she had no idea who he was or that he was part of a famous basketball family. His dad, Bob Hurley, was the coach for St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, and won 26 state championships during his 39-year tenure, while his brother, Bobby Hurley, was a star in Duke University’s basketball team and the head coach of Arizona State University.

“I met her at Seton Hall,” Dan told WTNH in March 2023. “It’s like, by far, the best thing that happened to me at Seton Hall, but that was the thing that saved my life when I met her and changed my life and made me want to be better.”

She added, “I didn’t know his story. And then, you know, you just became we just became friends, and next thing you know, we’re engaged. We’ve been best friends ever since.”

They got married in 1997

Dan and Andrea tied the knot on August 29, 1997, in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, while she was still a student. The day coincided with Dan’s parents' anniversary as well.

On their 26th anniversary in 2023, Andrea wrote a sweet tribute to Dan on Instagram alongside pictures of the two of them through the years.

“26 years with the love of my life💕,” she wrote in the caption. “We put in the work to make it work and created a life that we’re so proud of🤍 Happy Anniversary to my perfect match🥰.”

They have two sons together

Dan and Andrea’s first son, Danny, was born on July 1, 1999. Andrew followed three years later on January 30, 2002. Dan was already into his college coaching career as an assistant coach at Rutgers University when Danny was born, and even almost missed his birth, Andrea told the New York Post.

While their elder son was due on July 7, Danny had a recruiting trip planned to Croatia that had him flying out on July 5.

"[Then-head Coach Kevin Bannon’s wife] Cindy Bannon told me to drink two bottles of castor oil and go for a walk around the block. She said, ‘I guarantee you’ll go into labor,' " Andrea told the outlet. "Well, don’t ever f------ do that. It was the most horrible experience of my life. But the baby was born on July 1 and at least his dad was there.”

She has a podcast with other wives of college coaches

After Andrea befriended Nicole Kellogg, wife of then-University of Massachusetts basketball head coach Derek Kellogg, the two realized how much they had in common with each other as wives of NCAA coaches.

Their friendship sparked an idea in Andrea to start a podcast, Ball is Wife, together which came to fruition in 2021.

“Who else feels like us,” Andrea told The Athletic in February 2021. “Is anybody else going through this? What do other coaches’ wives do on game day? What do other coaches’ wives do when you have four losses in a row?”

She continued, “Like, what do you do? How do you feel? What about your kids? How are your kids reacting to this profession and the good and the bad that come with it?”

Andrea and Nicole invited guests on their podcast including other wives of athletes and coaches to delve into what happens behind the scenes.

She is passionate about her husband’s team

Though Andrea may not be a passionate basketball fan herself, she does root for UConn and Dan and shows her support in her own way by helping her husband however she can.

“When you figure out how you could help your other half get better at what he does, and you see it come back to you,” she told WTNH. “It’s a friendship. It’s working together as a team. I try to make his life easier in any way that I possibly can.”

She also has grown attached to the players that join the school’s team, often treating them like family.

“Every single team that you have, every kid that comes into your life,” she said. “I always say it just snags a little piece of my heart. His heart. I love these kids and the coaches and the coaches’ families so much that I don’t want this to end. Like you’re not going to get this time back.”

Both boys grew up with their dad as their coach while he taught at St. Benedict in Newark, New Jersey.

"I stayed in high school coaching longer than I needed to for Danny Jr. and Andrew," Dan told FOX Sports. "I wanted to be a parent that gave them love and time, to set an example for them. I did the Little League games, the Pop Warner, the CYO matchups. That all meant something to me.”

Danny attended his dad’s alma mater

Danny eventually followed in both of his parents’ footsteps, attending Seton Hall where he graduated in 2021 with a degree in history.

“So proud of the man that you are becoming....so impressed with how much you have matured these last 4 years,” Dan wrote on Instagram in honor of Danny’s graduation. “We are alike in so many ways and now we share this as fellow Pirates...Love you my man! 👨‍🎓❤️🏴‍☠️.”

Since graduating, Danny has worked as an aide to the governor in New Jersey and as a legislative aide in the Senate President Scutari, per his LinkedIn.

Andrew joined the UConn basketball team as a walk-on during his freshman year. Now, he and his dad have seen the team to a championship in April 2023.

"To go through basketball with him, it’s really powerful and makes me emotional,” Dan told FOX Sports. “There’s been times where I think about the journey in this sport, and the fact I can share in that with my boy now, you just hug your son and cry tears of holy s--- in those moments."

Though having one's dad as their coach may be even more added pressure to an athlete, Andrew has said he hasn’t felt the heat, thanks to the support of his close-knit family.

“Yeah, it’s definitely hard not to acknowledge the basketball family that I come from,” Andrew told CTInsider in April 2023. “But no, I don’t feel any pressure, really. It's hard to when you have such a supportive family around you, and they do a great job of reminding how much they love me … so it doesn't really bother me at all.”

The two also aren’t afraid to show their love for each other on and off the court. After a March 2023 game that moved UConn to the Elite Eight round of March Madness, the father-son duo shared a sweet embrace, touching their foreheads to one another in celebration of their victory.

"I said thanks for being my therapist for most of the season,” Dan said when asked what he told his son after the game, per CTInsider. “It's so great to have your son on the team and obviously to do this together is special.”

While Andrew doesn't typically play throughout the game, Dan put his son in to dribble the ball in the last few seconds of the National Championship game in March Madness in April 2024 as the Huskies closed the game with a win.

Dan says both his sons are similar to him

Dan is a proud father of both of his sons and is happy to say they have strong similarities to him.

“He's a chip off the old block,” Dan said of Andrew after a game, per CTInsider. “He's just a mini me. Both my boys are.”

Andrew shared that he feels like he even has insight into his dad’s mindset during and after games.

“You can tell where his head is at all the time, and you could even feel the pressure going into [NCAA Tournament] games,” he said.
