Cristiano Ronaldo announces death of newborn son: 'We will always love you'

Cristiano Ronaldo and partner Georgina Rodriguez announced the death of their newborn son Monday. The Manchester United superstar released a statement on Instagram and Twitter announcing the news, and asking fans for "privacy at this very difficult time."

Ronaldo said he and Rodriguez were "devastated by the loss," in the statement. They added the birth of their newborn daughter "gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness."

The full statement read:

"It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce our baby boy has passed away. It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel. Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness. We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support. We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time. Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you."

Ronaldo and Rodriguez revealed in October they were expecting twins.

Ronaldo has four other children, three born through surrogate mothers. Ronaldo and Rodriguez have one other child together, a daughter named Alana, who was born in 2017.
