Pat Cummins has laughed off claims from Pakistan coach Mohammad Hafeez that his side outplayed Australia in the Boxing Day Test, claiming the only reason they didn't come out on top was due to umpiring errors and the poor use of DRS technology. Hafeez was furious after Australia's 79-run victory at the MCG on Friday and questioned the consistency of decision-making from match officials.

The win gave Australia an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series but Hafeez says the result doesn't tell the whole story, insisting Pakistan's batting and bowling was better. "Our Pakistan team played better than the other team in general," Hafeez said.

"Our batting intent was better, our bowling was hitting in the right areas. Yes, we made some mistakes … but as a team, I believe that there were a lot of positives within the team. I believe inconsistent umpiring … has really given us the result, which should have been different."

Hafeez was most enraged about the dismissal of Mohammad Rizwan (35), which left Pakistan reeling at 6-219 in their chase of 317. Rizwan was initially given not out before the third umpire ruled the ball bowled by Pat Cummins struck the wristband of his glove on the way through to wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

Rizwan was seen gesturing to the umpire that it hit him on the forearm, not on the wrist, and even walked over to the official to show him a mark on his arm that he claims is where the ball hit him. His dismissal was a turning point in the game with Pakistan then crumbling, losing 5-18 in 6.4 overs to be all out for 237.

"He [Rizwan] is a very honest person and he said to me he did not even feel that it touched anywhere near the gloves," Hafeez said. "There should be conclusive evidence to reverse the decision of an umpire … and there was no very conclusive kind of evidence. Technology is basically putting the curse on this beautiful game of cricket."

Hafeez then took aim at the ball-tracking technology in his furious tirade, calling for the umpire's call on ball-tracking LBW decisions to be removed immediately. "We play this game for the fans, and the fans will never understand why this technology is inconsistent," Hafeez said.

"We played this beautiful game of cricket on the basics of the game, but sometimes the technology brings decisions, which as humans we don't understand. The ball hitting the stump is always out. Why it's an umpire's call, I never understand that."

Pat Cummins laughs off Mohammad Hafeez's claims

Pat Cummins laughed off Hafeez's claims that the better side lost and defended the umpiring decisions that played a huge factor in the result. "They played well, but glad we got the win," Cummins said. "It doesn't really matter, does it? It's the team that wins in the end."

"Some (umpiring decisions) go your way, some don't. There was a few umpire's calls for both teams," he said. "I think it all evens itself out. I thought this game was pretty 50-50, so there's nothing that worried us too much."
