Nevill sends message to selectors with remarkable world record

Peter Nevill has sent a timely reminder to Test selectors ahead of the Ashes by achieving an impressive world record.

With incumbent wicket-keeper Matthew Wade under immense pressure to retain his place in the side, Nevill put on an absolute masterclass of glovework in NSW's domestic one-day cup victory over the Cricket Australia XI on Sunday.

A brilliant century by opener Nic Maddinson propelled the Blues to a 93-run win as the CA XI suffered a middle order collapse to be all out for 239, with former Test gloveman Nevill involved in a world record-equalling eight dismissals for List A matches.

Nevill took six catches and affected two stumpings, the last of which was a particularly impressive effort down the leg side.

The eight dismissals equals the mark set by Somerset's Derek Taylor in 1982, Boland's Steve Palframan in 1997-98 and James Piper in 2001 for Worcestershire.

It also breaks the Australian record of six, previously held by Western Australia's Ryan Campbell (three times), Queensland's Wade Seccombe, NSW's Brad Haddin and WA's Adam Gilchrist (once each).

"I didn't realise that was the case but that's more of a reflection of the bowling than the wicket-keeping," Nevill said post-match.

Nevill's efforts come at the perfect time, with Australian greats Gilchrist and Michael Slater calling for his recall for this summer's Ashes.

"I think we go back to the guy who's (the best) gloveman," Slater said on Sunday.

"I read some quotes from Ian Healy. Now he knows a little bit about 'keeping and he said 'let's go for the gloveman, let's not make excuses for the top six batters doing the job and expect the 'keeper to do what Gilchrist did'.

"It's like looking for another Warnie – you don't find them. Get the guy who can take all (the catches).

"(Nevill) averaged over 50 for NSW last year. There's nothing wrong with his batting.

"He might not be an aggressor but he does a fantastic job. He might not talk as much as Wade but I'm not sure the talk from Wade is appealing to some of his teammates."
