Local cricketer wins match with 40-run final over

A village cricket team in England have scored 40 runs off the final over for the most unlikely of victories.

Dorchester-on-Thames needed 35 off the final six balls against Swinbrook in their Oxfordshire Cricket Association match recently.

54-year-old Steve McComb was handed the task of producing the late heroics, and managed to pull off the win with a sensational display of hitting.

While some would say 36 runs is the most you can possibly score from six balls, McComb capitalised on some ill-discipline from his opponents to blast an incredible 40.

The over began with a no-ball that was promply dispatched for six, before another six from the second ball.

After a third-ball dot, McComb smashed two consecutive fours (one of which was another no-ball).

The next two balls were both sent for six, leaving scores level with just one ball remaining.

McComb promplty blasted the fifth six of the over, winning the match and bringing up his century.

"It was an amazing end to the game," McComb told the BBC.

“I had nothing to lose in the final over and the boundaries weren't huge, so I knew there was a slim chance.

"I've had an arthritic ankle for many years and I can’t run very well between the wickets, as the lads constantly remind me, so I either try to score a boundary or hop for a single.

"When they brought the field in for the final ball I knew if I got bat on ball we’d be OK."

Teammate Richard Sharman, who was scoring at the time, said: "I got so excited the scorebook's a bit of a mess, but it was a pleasure to watch."
