Sri Lankan cricketer's ridiculous celebration fail

A hilarious premature celebration has left a Sri Lankan cricketer with egg on his face during an international T20 match against South Africa.

Asela Gunaratne thought he'd hit the winning runs when he knicked a ball over the Proteas keeper to the boundary rope to bring up a four.

Wild scenes followed as the Sri Lanka player ripped one of the stumps out of the ground and ran around yelling in triumph.

The only problem was, they actually needed five runs to win so his antics came to an abrupt halt.

"He's gone off... not yet buddy, not yet," one of the commentators said.

"You've still got to finish the job, one more to get."

The camera flashed to fans in the crowd who had a stunned look on their faces as they tried to work out what was going on in the middle.

Fortunately for Gunaratne, he did actually manage to hit the winning run on the next ball, but it will be hard to live down such as embarrassing and comical celebration fail.
