Indian batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad has left the cricket world in a frenzy after setting an extraordinary record in a domestic 50-over match. In a moment of never-before-seen brilliance, Gaikwad belted an astonishing seven successive sixes in one over.

Gaikwad - who has played one ODI and nine Twenty20 matches for India - hammered 42 runs for Maharashtra in the seven-delivery over against Uttar Pradesh, which included one no-ball. The 25-year-old batter finished unbeaten on 220 as his team made 5-330.

Left-arm spinner Shiva Singh was on the receiving end of Gaikwad's six-hitting blitz in the 49th over, as the batter became the first man to hit seven sixes in one over in List A cricket history. Maharashtra then bowled out Uttar Pradesh for 272 to win by 58 runs.

Gaikwad's remarkable batting exploits saw him join an illustrious list of players to have hit six sixes in one over of professional cricket. Others to have achieved one of the rarest feats in world cricket include Garry Sobers (1968), Ravi Shastri (1985), Herschelle Gibbs (2007), Yuvraj Singh (2007), Ross Whiteley (2017), Hazratullah Zazai (2018), Leo Carter (2020), Kieron Pollard (2021), Thisara Perera (2021) and Jaskaran Malhotra (2021).

The masterful batting display came in the quarter-final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy - India's inter-state 50-over competition - which took place at the world's biggest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad. Gaikwad made his T20 international debut last year after a sterling performance as an attacking opener with Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.

It is the second record by an Indian batsman in as many weeks, after Tamil Nadu's N Jagadeesan smashed 277 against Arunachal Pradesh, the highest ever score in the 50-over format, surpassing the 268 of England's Alistair Brown against Glamorgan in 2002.

However, it was Gaikwad's feat for Maharashtra that sent the internet into meltdown as cricket fans reacted to the unprecedented drama.
