Commanders acquire CB Marshon Lattimore in NFL trade deadline deal
Cornerback Marshon Lattimore is on the move after 97 career regular-season games in New Orleans.
The Saints traded Lattimore to the Washington Commanders, the two teams announced. The Saints are receiving a third-fourth and a sixth-round pick in exchange. The Commanders will also get a fifth-round draft selection.
Lattimore was viewed in NFL circles as the top cornerback on the trading block. His name was often floated around in trade discussions as the clock ticked closer to the NFL’s Nov. 5, 4 p.m. trade deadline.
Lattimore’s started in every single game he appeared in as a Saint. He’s a four-time Pro Bowler with 405 tackles, 15 interceptions and 88 pass defended.
The eighth-year cornerback didn’t play in Week 9 due to a hamstring injury and was placed on injured reserve in Week 10 last year with an ankle injury. However, Lattimore has proven that he’s a top-flight corner when he is healthy and on the field.
New Orleans drafted Lattimore in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft (pick No. 11 overall). He was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in his first season.
The Saints signed Lattimore to a five-year extension in 2021.
How Marshon Lattimore fits with the Washington Commanders
There were rumors that the Washington Commanders were searching for a shutdown cornerback. They got one in Lattimore.
Lattimore’s allowed below a 65% completion percentage for seven straight seasons, and he’s allowed a passer rating of below 75 when targeted for three years in a row. He's been targeted on just 9.7% of his coverage snaps, the second lowest among outside corners, per Next Gen Stats.
Lattimore immediately becomes Washington’s best cornerback in a room that includes Benjamin St-Juste, Mike Sainristil, and Michael Davis.
The Commanders currently have the NFL’s fifth-best pass defense, but they only have three interceptions this year.
