Comical scenes as BBL star gets 'roof six and out'

Bizarre scenes unfolded in the Big Bash on Thursday night after a massive shot from Ashton Turner hit the roof at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium.

The Perth Scorchers man let loose with a massive shot off the bowling of Melbourne Renegades’ Dan Christian that was destined to clear the boundary until it suddenly dropped from the rafters.

Confusion reigned as the commentators pointed out that the umpire had just given the Scorchers six runs despite the ball dropping in the middle of the outfield.

It soon became clear that Turner’s shot was hit so hard and high that it plummeted down at a right angle after hitting the roof, meaning an automatic six runs.

However, Turner’s luck ran out the very next ball as he attempted to send another Christian delivery over the fence, only to be caught by Cameron White.

Earlier, Renegades’ Pakistani recruit Unman Shinwari went from hero to zero after squandering a golden catching opportunity in his Big Bash debut.

The left arm quick got his maiden match in the Australian Twenty20 competition off to the perfect start after snaring Sam Whiteman for eight runs in the third over.

The 24-year-old had the chance to make it a second wicket a short time later but contrived to spill the catch when it seemed easier to take it.

Shinwari helped the Renegades get off to a flying start after clean-bowling Whiteman.

The Scorchers’ opener was caught at sea trying to paddle a pitched-up delivery to the boundary that smashed into his stumps.

A disciplined performance from Melbourne’s bowlers on Thursday night kept the Scorchers to their lowest BBL away total.

Test squad member Mitch Marsh continued his run of low scores, only managing three before he skied Jack Wildermuth to first-gamer Will Sutherland at mid-on for three.

In their first games for the Renegades, Christian and Shinwari starred.

Shinwari opened the bowling and took 2-17 from four overs, while Christian snared 3-22 from three.

Kane Richardson took 3-23 from four overs and spinner Cameron Boyce also played a key role, with a tight 0-13 from his four.

Opener Michael Klinger top-scored with 28 from 32 balls, including four boundaries, and the next-highest score was 13.

The Renegades went into the match with the inglorious honour of having never beaten the Scorchers after losing on all eight previous occasions they’ve played.
