Chelsea vs Real Madrid - LIVE!

Chelsea eased past Real Madrid in a 3-2 win to make a successful start to their bid for Women’s Champions League success, despite a late scare at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have fallen agonisingly short in recent seasons but will hope to take the final step this time with Sonia Bompastor, who has won the competition as a player and manager, now in the dugout.

It had been the perfect start to the night for Chelsea, who took the lead inside a few minutes when Sjoeke Nusken helped the ball towards goal and it took a decisive deflection off Sheila Garcia. That advantage was doubled on the half-hour mark, in potentially fortuitous circumstances. Nusken went down in the box under minimal contact, the referee pointed to the spot and Guro Reiten stepped up to find the bottom corner.

Madrid pulled one back before the break, after Chelsea failed to clear the ball and it fell for Alba Redondo to finish, but the Blues had their two-goal lead restored shortly after the restart, when Mayra Ramirez looped in a header from Lauren James’ cross. It looked set to be a comfortable stroll to the finish line for the hosts, though that all changed with a just over five minutes remaining when Caicedo turned home from close range at the back post. Chelsea just about held firm.

Job done!

A nervy finale in the end but Chelsea hold on and it’s a perfect start to their Champions League campaign.

Chelsea 3-2 Real Madrid

21:54 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Chelsea are nearly, nearly there.

Cut back from out wide, Nusken is there to clear. Comes back to Carmona, can’t pick anyone out and it’s a goal-kick.

That should be that.

Chelsea 3-2 Real Madrid

21:51 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Shocking decision from Hernandez.

She tries a shot from the other side of London and it’s out for a goal-kick. That eases the pressure, a few more seconds ticked away.

Chelsea 3-2 Real Madrid

21:47 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Musovic forced into a save from a Lakrar header, Madrid are on the charge now.

Chelsea are starting to look a bit ragged...

Well then...

Weir does superbly on the edge of the area, finds Caicedo and she produces the finish.

Game on.

Chelsea 3-1 Real Madrid

21:40 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Space opens up for Bjorn to charge forward, straight through the middle and running at the Madrid defence.

Eventually tries to make the pass, but it runs through to Misa to claim.

Chelsea 3-1 Real Madrid

21:37 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Here is that goal from Ramirez, one that has Chelsea firmly in control with 15 minutes or so remaining.

Chelsea 3-1 Real Madrid

21:33 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Redondo takes, Weir gets to the near post and flicks it on... nobody can get a touch.

Out for a goal-kick, that just needed a touch from anyone in the six-yard box.

Chelsea 3-1 Real Madrid

21:32 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Corner for the hosts, who continue to look much the better team.

Reiten swings it in, ball drops loose but Caicedo can lead the Real Madrid counter and she is flying forward.

Nobody catching her... all the way up the pitch to win a corner for Madrid.

Chelsea 3-1 Real Madrid

21:30 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Chelsea with three changes of their own.

Lawrence, Hamano and Beever-Jones on, replacing Kaptein, Ramirez and Baltimore.

Chelsea 3-1 Real Madrid

21:26 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Big chance for Chelsea!

James with a great cross in, picks out Ramirez and she should probably score. Can’t keep the header down and the opportunity goes.

Chelsea 3-1 Real Madrid

21:24 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Carmona with the free-kick for the visitors... leads to nothing. Chelsea looking comfortable.

Abelleira, who has just been booked, is off for Madrid, with Caicedo on in her place.

Chelsea 3-1 Real Madrid

21:20 , Matt Verri

59 mins: James a bit too keen in closing down, gives away the free-kick.

No sign yet of a Madrid comeback after the latest setback, it’s Chelsea who look the more likely to trouble the scoreboard again.

Saying that, it’s a poor back-pass from Bright and Weir is closing in... Musovic charges off her line to clear.

Chelsea 3-1 Real Madrid

21:16 , Matt Verri

55 mins: So a terrible start to both the first and second half for Real Madrid. It’s really cost them.

They responded well the first time around, but it’s a big ask to do it again.

GOAL! Chelsea 3-1 Real Madrid | Mayra Ramirez 53'

21:14 , Matt Verri

James with the ball in, Ramirez’s looping header and Chelsea have a two-goal lead once again.

It’s all Chelsea since the restart, Madrid are being pushed back.

Chelsea 2-1 Real Madrid

21:08 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Kaptein with an early shot for Chelsea, big deflection and it rolls through for the goalkeeper to claim.

Hosts need to start this half quickly, having just lost the momentum before the break.

Back underway!

21:06 , Matt Verri

Up and running again in west London.

How Real Madrid pulled one back...

20:59 , Matt Verri

Chelsea just couldn’t get it clear.

Shots kept coming in, eventually one was going to hit the back of the net.

HT: Chelsea 2-1 Real Madrid

20:51 , Matt Verri

And that is half-time.

Chelsea took the lead early, we’ll see if that goes down as one for Nusken or a Garcia own goal, before Reiten scored from the spot.

Madrid right back in it though, thanks to Redondo’s sharp finish.

Chelsea 2-1 Real Madrid

20:49 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Not much pace in the match as half-time approaches. Chelsea happy to slow things down and just get to the break now after that setback.

Just the one minute added on.

Chelsea 2-1 Real Madrid

20:46 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Elsewhere in this group, FC Twente have taken the lead away to Celtic.

Would be a big shock if either of those sides were able to sneak into the top two and progress through to the knockout stages.

GOAL! Chelsea 2-1 Real Madrid | Alba Redondo 39'

20:44 , Matt Verri

There’s one back!

Chelsea couldn’t clear the danger, ball fell for Redondo on her right foot and she fires a strike through the legs of Musovic.

Chelsea 2-0 Real Madrid

20:41 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Weather watch - rain has eased off at long last.

Cross in from the left for Real Madrid, Musovic comfortable in claiming that and easing any pressure on her defence.

Chelsea 2-0 Real Madrid

20:36

32 mins: Real Madrid very nearly hit back.

Redondo with the strike, good save from Musovic and Bronze does really well to stop Del Castillo running onto the rebound and turning home.

Chelsea 2-0 Real Madrid

20:34 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Del Castillo goes well to avoid a booking, after dragging Baltimore back.

Replays suggest that penalty decision was a bit harsh, not a lot of contact. Fair to say Chelsea don’t care one bit.

GOAL! Chelsea 2-0 Real Madrid | Guro Reiten 28'

20:32 , Matt Verri

Never in doubt!

Misa goes the right way but Reiten finds the bottom corner. Chelsea have doubled their lead.

PENALTY CHELSEA!

20:31 , Matt Verri

Referee points to the spot!

Loose ball in the box, Nusken brought down and after a few seconds, the spot-kick is given.

Chelsea 1-0 Real Madrid

20:30 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Baltimore’s cross is behind Ramirez, but Chelsea stay on the attack.

Worked back out to the right, Bronze with the ball in this time and it’s hacked away for a corner.

Chelsea 1-0 Real Madrid

20:27 , Matt Verri

23 mins: It is absolutely lashing it down now in west London. Truly miserable.

Chelsea comfortable enough in possession but haven’t done much in terms of creating chances since that early goal. All very patient.

Chelsea 1-0 Real Madrid

20:23 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Better from Madrid, starting to offer a threat.

Weir with good work on the edge of the area, finds space for the shot but it’s a comfortable save.

Chelsea 1-0 Real Madrid

20:22 , Matt Verri

17 mins: It’s turned into a bit of a scrappy match, neither side particularly dominant at the moment.

Most of Chelsea’s best moments have come down the right, as you’d probably expect.

Chelsea 1-0 Real Madrid

20:17 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Ramirez gets to the byline, tries to get a cross into the middle but can’t keep it in play.

Sharp work in the build-up from Rytting Kaneryd, who has been really impressive.

In less positive news, it’s started raining again...

Chelsea 1-0 Real Madrid

20:15 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Painful one for Rytting Kaneryd, who goes clattering into the advertising hoardings after tracking back.

Takes a few seconds to get back up, but she’s fine to continue.

Chelsea 1-0 Real Madrid

20:12 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Bright slides in, had to time that and does so. Concedes the corner as she is forced into fairly drastic action.

It’s headed behind, appeals for another corner but Chelsea get the goal-kick.

Chelsea 1-0 Real Madrid

20:10

6 mins: Disastrous start for Real Madrid - perfect for Chelsea.

Ramirez holds it up well and here comes the hosts again, Reiten with the shot but not enough power on it.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Real Madrid | OG - Sheila Garcia 3'

20:08 , Matt Verri

Early Chelsea corner, they’ve started well.

Low ball in, Real Madrid deal with it well but the Blues are back on the attack.

Worked down the right, in it comes from Rytting Kaneryd... and in!

It’s an own goal from Garcia.

KICK-OFF!

20:05 , Matt Verri

We’re up and running at Stamford Bridge!

20:04 , Matt Verri

Chelsea forced into a late change.

Hannah Hampton was down to start in goal, but it’s Zecira Musovic who has come out and will play for the Blues.

That is the reason for the delayed kick-off.

20:03 , Matt Verri

Running a few minutes late - good start.

We’re finally done with the handshakes and anthem. Time to begin.

Here we go...

19:58 , Matt Verri

Players are out onto the pitch in west London.

It’s been raining on and off all day, heavy showers at various points. Not ideal conditions, we’ll say...

Not long now!

19:47 , Matt Verri

Warm-ups coming to an end at Stamford Bridge, just over ten minutes to go until kick-off.

Sonia Bompastor has made a perfect start to life in the Chelsea dugout, but this is by far her biggest test.

The 44-year-old has experience of delivering on the biggest stage - she’s won the Champions League as a player and as a manager.

Chelsea's European schedule

19:35 , Matt Verri

Chelsea are away to FC Twente next week, before travelling to take on Celtic on November 13.

A week later they are back in London to host the Scottish side, and Chelsea are then at home to Twente in early December.

The group-stage comes to an end with a trip to Madrid on December 17, by which point the Blues will hope to have wrapped up a place in the knockout stages.

Familiar foes

19:22 , Matt Verri

These two sides meet in the Champions League for the third season in a row.

The clash at Stamford Bridge last season ended in a 2-1 win for Chelsea, who then had Emma Hayes in the dugout.

Plenty of change since then, but the Blues will be eyeing a similar result.

Sickness issues for Chelsea

19:14 , Matt Verri

According to reports from BBC Sport, Chelsea have been dealing with a sickness camp in the bag over recent days.

It’s believed that some players missed training yesterday as a result, and it could explain why Catarina Macario and Erin Cuthbert are not in the squad tonight.

In the building!

19:04 , Matt Verri

The Blues have arrived at a wet and fairly miserable Stamford Bridge...

Perfect records

So far, so good for both these sides domestically.

Chelsea are two from two in the Women’s Super League, having beaten Crystal Palace 7-0 last time out.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, have won all five of their league matches, scoring 15 times and conceding just once in the process.

Bright: Champions League title remains the goal

18:22 , Matt Verri

Chelsea have reached the Champions League semi-finals four times and the final once in the past seven years, and Millie Bright is desperate that this season is the one where the club can get over the line.

“We've come very close,” she told TNT Sports.

“And I think that they're the hardest ones to take when you're just not quite over that final line. But for us, I think we've never shied away from them.

“It's an ambition that the club, as players, and staff want. We've certainly been on a journey with the Champions League over the years, but it's certainly one we're just as passionate about winning. It's the one that we haven't won.

“We've got a lot of changes this season, and Sonia coming in, she's laid the expectations down, and there's no shying away from what's expected of this group and what our ambitions are."

Stage is set!

All eyes on west London tonight...

Standard Sport prediction

17:58 , Matt Verri

Both sides have started the season in impressive form domestically.

Chelsea got the better of Madrid last term in Europe and we’re backing them to do the same tonight, in what should be a tight encounter.

Chelsea to win, 2-1.

Chelsea team news

17:48 , Matt Verri

Chelsea are still contending with a lengthy injury list, with Sam Kerr, Sophie Ingle and Niamh Charles among those unavailable.

Mayra Ramirez is pushing to lead the line tonight, but Aggie Beever-Jones could keep her place having started and scored against Crystal Palace last time out.
