Women’s FA Cup Final LIVE!

The two teams battling it out for the WSL title meet at a sold-out Wembley when Chelsea take on Manchester United in the Women’s FA Cup Final. Chelsea have been the dominant team in the women’s game domestically over the past decade and are targeting their 13th major trophy under manager Emma Hayes. United, meanwhile, are bidding to win their first ever piece of major silverware.

Chelsea are one point behind Manchester United in the WSL with a game in hand and, while Arsenal are still in the hunt, it looks like a straight shootout between the two clubs for the title.

But, for now, FA Cup glory is the only thing on their minds. Chelsea are seeking their third successive FA Cup triumph and Hayes has said she is expecting “an absolute classic”. With kick-off at 2.30pm BST, follow all the action at Wembley.

Here’s the moment that settled the game.. and the celebration!

FT: Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

16:27 , Giuseppe Muro

90+6 mins: Berger makes a mess of a cross and it almost drops for Galton... but Chelsea hack it clear! Surely that will be that.

16:26 , Giuseppe Muro

90+4 mins: Cleared by Chelsea!

16:25 , Giuseppe Muro

90+3 mins: United are trying to throw everything at Chelsea but the Blues are standing firm. United corner... is this the final chance?

16:23 , Giuseppe Muro

90 mins: Into 6 minutes of added time. Not long for Chelsea to hold on...

16:16 , Giuseppe Muro

84 mins: United attack but Mjelde is there to hack the ball away.

16:11 , Giuseppe Muro

80 mins: Chance for Chelsea to seal it! But Ingle can’t keep her shot down after more brilliant work from Kerr. That should be that.

Dom Smith at Wembley

16:03 , Giuseppe Muro

Well, well, well. Who could have guessed? “I’ve never been to Wembley and not won a trophy”, Kerr proudly told me when I spoke to her this week. She has scored yet another potentially priceless goal in her favourite stadium. Is she about to keep her Wembley trophy record up?

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United | Sam Kerr 68’

15:58 , Giuseppe Muro

Inevitable! Chelsea have been second best for long periods but Kerr puts the Blues in front!

Reiten slides in Harder down the right, she puts in a superb low cross for Kerr to bury a finish at the back post.

For the third successive Women's FA Cup final, Kerr scores... and she celebrates with a back-flip.

15:56 , Giuseppe Muro

65 mins: Big chance for Chelsea! Harder is involved again, she springs the offside trap, tripes to square to Kerr but United clear.

15:52 , Giuseppe Muro

60 mins: Change for United: Williams on for Parris.

15:50 , Giuseppe Muro

58 mins: Harder involved straight away! Kerr does brilliantly to find her inside the area and her turn and shot is straight at Earps.

15:48 , Giuseppe Muro

57 mins: Double change for Chelsea: Harder and Ingle on for Leupolz and Fleming.

15:47 , Giuseppe Muro

55 mins: It’s all United! ! Parris gets to the byline and Perisset has to turn the ball behind for a corner, which comes to nothing.

15:45 , Giuseppe Muro

53 mins: Another shot on target from United, this time from Galton, but Berger saves easily again.

Dom Smith at Wembley

15:43 , Giuseppe Muro

That was a poor error by Mjelde to let the ball pass her by and offer Russo the chance to sting the gloves of Berger. A couple of Chelsea errors at the back went unpunished in the first half, and United failed to capitalise on another there.

15:43 , Giuseppe Muro

51 mins: Chance for Russo! Straight down the other end… Mjelde gets herself into trouble and Russo muscles her off the ball and sends a powerful shot from distance straight at Berger.

15:42 , Giuseppe Muro

50 mins: Kerr latches onto Le Tissier's poor clearance and flicks a header at goal, but Earps collects easily.

15:40 , Giuseppe Muro

49 mins: Harder is being put through her paces on the touchline. How long will it be before she is introduced? Quiet start to the second half.

15:35 , Giuseppe Muro

46 mins: Back underway at Wembley! Surely Chelsea will improve in this second half.

Dom Smith at Wembley

15:22 , Giuseppe Muro

It sums up that first half that Turner headed over with the final chance before referee Emily Heaslip blew her whistle. Despite the disallowed goal after 19 seconds, it just never really came to life. The few chances we did see went United’s way. Work for Chelsea to do after the break.

HT: Chelsea 0-0 Manchester United

15:19 , Giuseppe Muro

United had a goal ruled out for offside after just 20 seconds and they have been the better team so far.

But Chelsea went close at the end of the half when Earps tipped a James header onto the post.

15:18 , Giuseppe Muro

45 mins: Nope, the free-kick stands and it comes to nothing.

15:18 , Giuseppe Muro

45 mins: Brilliant running from Parris and she wins a free-kick to United right on the edge of the area. But was that foul inside the area? VAR is taking a look...

15:12 , Giuseppe Muro

41 mins: The closest Chelsea have come! What a save from Earps! James sends a looping header goalwards and Earps does brilliantly to tip to the ball onto the post.

15:09 , Giuseppe Muro

36 mins: Another big chance for United! And Galton should really do better. Russo fires a low cross across goal and Galton shins the ball over the bar from close range.

Dom Smith at Wembley

15:05 , Giuseppe Muro

… and there is that clear-cut chance I mentioned. The deflection off Mjelde made Turner’s shot much harder to save, so credit to Berger for clawing it to safety. United the only side really to have had a chance so far.

15:05 , Giuseppe Muro

32 mins: Chance for United! And a huge save from Berger! Chelsea fail to deal with a free-kick into the box, Turner’s shot takes a deflection and Berger sticks out a strong left hand to save. That was the biggest chance since that disallowed goal after 20 seconds.

Dom Smith at Wembley

15:01 , Giuseppe Muro

A half-hearted Mexican wave has broken out. In a sense it’s the most lively aspect of a final that you just feel really needs a clear-cut chance to spark it into life.

14:59 , Giuseppe Muro

27 mins: All gone a bit quiet here. Neither side creating much at the moment.

Both teams starting to settle into this match now, which is just as well considering the frantic start with United scoring that offside goal after 19 seconds. Atmosphere has gone a little flat as a result of some long passages of Chelsea possession.

14:54 , Giuseppe Muro

22 mins: United are knocking on the door. Batlle crosses from the right and Russo winds up to have a shot but Perisset sticks out a leg to block.

Dom Smith at Wembley

14:50 , Giuseppe Muro

First real chance for James to show what she can do, as she twists this way and that down the right flank and eventually wins a free-kick after drawing a foul from her bamboozled marker, Blundell. Hayes will hope James grows into this game.

14:49 , Giuseppe Muro

17 mins: The free-kick comes to nothing and United clear.

14:47 , Giuseppe Muro

16 mins: James does really well down the right and gets hauled down to win Chelsea a free-kick in a crossing position just outside the area.

14:45 , Giuseppe Muro

14 mins: Toone does well to feed Parris inside the area but her shot is easy saved by Berger. United still well on top.

Dom Smith at Wembley

14:43 , Giuseppe Muro

Not a particularly inspiring start this from Chelsea. Manchester United have been the more innovative and progressive with the ball. A big disjointed from Emma Hayes’s side so far…

14:39 , Giuseppe Muro

7 mins: A bit of concern for Chelsea here with Leupolz down. A chance for Hayes to give her team some instructions after a slow start.

14:36 , Giuseppe Muro

5 mins: Berger makes a bit of a meal of a cross from Zelem but she gets away with it.

14:36 , Giuseppe Muro

4 mins: Things have settled down after that electric start. United have made a confident start here though.

Dom Smith at Wembley

14:33 , Giuseppe Muro

What a start we’ve had to this game. Amazing! That was marginal. Really, really marginal.

14:32 , Giuseppe Muro

1 mins: Early drama! United have the ball in the net after just 20 seconds but Toone was offside in the build-up! There’s a VAR check but Toone was inches offside.

Kick-off!

14:30 , Giuseppe Muro

We’re underway at Wembley!

14:22 , Giuseppe Muro

It’s a glorious day at a sold-out Wembley. The teams are making their way out onto the pitch...!

14:16 , Giuseppe Muro

Emma Hayes believes her Chelsea side are in their best form of the season ahead of today’s game.

Following their Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of Barcelona, Chelsea have won their last three Women’s Super League matches 2-1, 7-0 and 6-0 against Liverpool, Everton and Leicester City respectively.

Hayes hopes their experience counts this afternoon.

“It’s a position we’ve been in many times before, having lifted the trophy four times, whereas it’s a new experience for Manchester United,” she said.

“We know how insatiable the hunger to get your hands on that first trophy is, but don’t underestimate what it means to this group of players to defend silverware too.

“We won two incredible Finals in recent seasons, against Arsenal and then Manchester City, and no team in the WSL era has done it three times in a row. We want to keep making history.”

14:08 , Giuseppe Muro

Not long now until kick-off. This should get you in the mood…

13:57 , Giuseppe Muro

Chelsea have already suffered disappointment in one final this season, losing to Arsenal in the Continental League Cup in March.

The Blues were narrowly beaten by Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals so will be desperate to get their hands on silverware this weekend.

They will be looking to become the first team since Arsenal in 2008 to win the trophy three times in a row.

"Previous success is not indicative of future success," said manager Emma Hayes.

"We're playing an outstanding team who have led the way in the league this year. They're deserving to be in the cup final.

"Being there in the past gives you the luxury of understanding what it's like but it's no advantage whatsoever.

"This year our team has been written off quite easily but we're always favourites in our eyes."

So Chelsea have made three changes to the team that beat Leicester 6-0 on Wednesday.

Fleming, Mjelde and Kerr come back into the team. Harder is on the bench.

For United, captain Zelem returns following suspension in their only change from their 3-0 win over Tottenham last weekend.

Manchester United have never beaten Chelsea before.

In nine meetings in all competitions, they have earned just one draw, losing the other eight - including their only two defeats in the WSL this season.

But their manager Marc Skinner is not reading too much into those previous results.

“We know we can beat Chelsea, but we know how difficult that is," he said.

“There's no doubt in my mind that if you want to pick a favourite, then Chelsea should be put on that mantle because of the fact they have been here before and done this before.

“But the reality is we have a team of rebels that want to make sure that won't be the fact.”

United stand on the verge of a first major trophy since the club reformed the women’s team in 2018.

Chelsea have won both WSL meetings between the two clubs this season but United have reduced the gap between the two teams.

United have won seven successive matches since losing to Chelsea in March, and boast four Lionesses in Ella Toone, Alessia Russo, Nikita Parris and Mary Earps.

VAR and goalline technology in operation

12:52 , Giuseppe Muro

VAR and goalline technology will be in operation for the first time in the history of the Women’s FA Cup.

WSL referees' chief Bibi Steinhaus-Webb has said they had prepared for its use in the final for a “sustained period of time”.

It has previously been used in international women's tournaments and featured in the latter stages of the Women's Champions League, but it is not used in women's domestic competitions in England.

Whatever happens on the pitch today, this Women's FA Cup final will make history as the first sell-out since the game was first played at Wembley in 2015.

It means there will be 90,000 fans inside the national stadium.

That means the attendance will break the record of 49,094 set by last year’s final, which Chelsea won 3-2 against Manchester City.

“For me as a women’s football fan it means everything,” said Chelsea manager Emma Hayes.

“It has been something I’ve sat here on numerous occasions championing intentionally, pushing and demanding because I always knew that this day wasn’t far away.

“I was disappointed the crowd wasn’t bigger last year. Then obviously the Lionesses winning (the Euros), I always knew there should be no excuse this year from anyone, clubs, all the stakeholders.

“This is the new norm so hopefully we are talking (next) about putting semi-finals at neutral venues next year and making that an even bigger event because that is the next evolution of the game.”

Prediction

12:36 , Giuseppe Muro

The two can hardly be separated in the WSL, meaning we could be about to witness a hard-fought slog of an FA Cup final that goes all the way.

However, the Blues’ experience could be the defining factor.

A 1-1 draw, Chelsea to win on penalties.

Hayes expecting ‘an absolute classic'

Chelsea are one point behind Manchester United in the WSL with a game in hand and, while Arsenal are still in the hunt, it looks like a straight shootout between the two clubs for the title.

But, for now, FA Cup glory is the only thing on their minds.

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes is expecting “an absolute classic”.

Hayes said: “It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve been involved in an FA Cup Final, it’s always an incredibly special occasion – and we’re absolutely thrilled to be coming back to Wembley Stadium.

“I hope you’re all ready for what I expect to be an absolute classic of a Cup Final.

“These are two of the top teams in the country, fighting to be champions of the BWSL in what is probably the best title race there’s ever been for the league, and one thing is for sure: neither group of players are going to give an inch with the FA Cup within touching distance.”

Manchester United team news

Sam Kerr is fit for Chelsea after coming off with cramp in their 7-0 win over Everton last Sunday.

The Blues have Pernille Harder, who has missed the majority of the campaign due to injury, back and in form.
