The two teams battling it out for the WSL title meet at a sold-out Wembley when Chelsea take on Manchester United in the Women’s FA Cup Final. Chelsea have been the dominant team in the women’s game domestically over the past decade and are targeting their 13th major trophy under manager Emma Hayes. United, meanwhile, are bidding to win their first ever piece of major silverware.

Chelsea are one point behind Manchester United in the WSL with a game in hand and, while Arsenal are still in the hunt, it looks like a straight shootout between the two clubs for the title.

Emma Hayes believes her Chelsea side are in their best form of the season ahead of today’s game.

Following their Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of Barcelona, Chelsea have won their last three Women’s Super League matches 2-1, 7-0 and 6-0 against Liverpool, Everton and Leicester City respectively.

Hayes hopes their experience counts this afternoon.

“It’s a position we’ve been in many times before, having lifted the trophy four times, whereas it’s a new experience for Manchester United,” she said.

“We know how insatiable the hunger to get your hands on that first trophy is, but don’t underestimate what it means to this group of players to defend silverware too.

“We won two incredible Finals in recent seasons, against Arsenal and then Manchester City, and no team in the WSL era has done it three times in a row. We want to keep making history.”

Chelsea have already suffered disappointment in one final this season, losing to Arsenal in the Continental League Cup in March.

The Blues were narrowly beaten by Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals so will be desperate to get their hands on silverware this weekend.

Manchester United have never beaten Chelsea before.

In nine meetings in all competitions, they have earned just one draw, losing the other eight - including their only two defeats in the WSL this season.

But their manager Marc Skinner is not reading too much into those previous results.

“We know we can beat Chelsea, but we know how difficult that is," he said.

“There's no doubt in my mind that if you want to pick a favourite, then Chelsea should be put on that mantle because of the fact they have been here before and done this before.

WSL referees' chief Bibi Steinhaus-Webb has said they had prepared for its use in the final for a “sustained period of time”.

Whatever happens on the pitch today, this Women's FA Cup final will make history as the first sell-out since the game was first played at Wembley in 2015.

It means there will be 90,000 fans inside the national stadium.

That means the attendance will break the record of 49,094 set by last year’s final, which Chelsea won 3-2 against Manchester City.

“For me as a women’s football fan it means everything,” said Chelsea manager Emma Hayes.
