Chelsea: Gary Neville says how ‘no nonsense’ Mauricio Pochettino will deal with Todd Boehly and flop signings

Mauricio Pochettino will lay down the law to Chelsea’s owners and flop signings when he takes over in the dugout.

Gary Neville has tipped the Argentine to have an immediate impact at Stamford Bridge, where the incoming manager will find a club in disarray on and off the pitch.

Moments such as Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali entering the Blues’ dressing room will be no more, Neville has predicted ahead of Pochettino signing a three-year contract.

Neville told his podcast: “I love Pochettino. I’ve said that if Chelsea brought in Pochettino and refined the squad, added one or two more players, they could have a very good season next year.

“Pochettino will not take a job on where he doesn’t think there’s huge potential to get Chelsea back up to the very top of the league.

“He did it at Tottenham and it’s not a too dissimilar situation at Chelsea, with a group of players who maybe don’t run as much or are a bit older than he likes. But he can put it into them very quickly.

“Appointing him early will get him in place to look forward to pre-season, the recruitment and bringing stability. He’ll do that straight away, he won’t have any nonsense. All this stuff about owners in the dressing room, he won’t have that.

“I think it’s a really good move. I don’t think Chelsea can lose with this appointment, he will make massive improvements straight away.”

Standard Sport understand Pochettino will build his Chelsea squad around a collective of young, homegrown players and Neville has backed the coach to make ruthless decisions with the club’s expensive flops.

“I don’t think the past three or four weeks [of talks] will have been about his [contract] or his backroom team, I think that will have been about: ‘Are you going to buy into what I want to do with this squad?’,” he added.

“Because he will have looked at them meticulously, Pochettino, and his recruitment people around him and his staff and they will have said, ‘Right, these are the players I want on the bus and these are the players I don’t want on the bus… and you better back me or else there’s no point in me coming’.

“I suspect that is where the negotiations have been centred in the last few weeks. How much money will they lose, writing off their investments? They’re gonna have to suck on a lemon and back a manager who knows what he’s doing.”
