How Charley Hull stole golf’s weekend spotlight

Yahoo Sports' Jay Busbee explains how LPGA golfer Charley Hull burst into the mainstream this weekend.

Video transcript

It was a big weekend in professional golf.

Yuka Saso had a thrilling come from behind win to take the US Women's Open.

And big shot Bob mcintyre won the R BC Canadian Open over the PGA tour with his own father.

Caddying forms a very heartwarming scene.

But with all due respect to those two stories, the big winner of the week, Charlie Hull, the L PGA veteran didn't win the tournament but she won social media and in 2020 isn't that what counts?

She's been playing on the L PGA for 10 years.

But this was the weekend for whatever reason that she broke through big into the mainstream outside of golf, largely because of the fact that she was smoking cigarettes before during and after her round.

Now people love this.

This wouldn't have been out of place in the 19 eighties, but in 2024 the only person doing that is John Daley.

Not only that, she played pretty well, she finished tied for 19 and along the way, she handled hecklers and she even knocked back a dating proposal or two.

Now, she hasn't had tremendous success in the majors.

Her best record so far is a second place finish.

But she's well on the way and more to the point, she's fun.

And that is what golf needs.

Right now.

We need characters, we need stories, we need people like Charlie Hall.

So we see a lot more of her going forward.
