Barcelona fans were left in disbelief during their Round of 16 Champions League tie against PSG after Lionel Messi gave the Spanish giants hope, before they were cruelly dashed.

The Spanish outfit were a goal down in the game, and 5-0 down in the tie, when Messi took it upon himself to pick the ball up and launch a long range missile past Keylor Navas and into the top left corner.

Barcelona were piling on the pressure in search for another goal in the first half and only moments later Antoine Griezmann was fouled in the box.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner stood up to take the penalty, but the maestro opted to go straight down the middle.

Navas was able to get a foot on the ball, which ricocheted against the top bar and out.

Rival fans were quick to point out this wasn't Messi's first crucial penalty miss.

Messi missed a penalty in the Champions League semi-final against Chelsea in 2012.

He also missed a big penalty in Copa America final, which had all but dashed hopes of a comeback in the second half.

Fans were quick to sink the boot into Messi after the miss, which all but dashed any hopes of a comeback.

Messi's moment of magic

Kylian Mbappe put PSG ahead after he stepped up and smashed a superbly taken penalty into the top corner to leave Barcelona reeling.

In need of a miracle, the Catalans invariably turn to their Argentine maestro Messi and the 33-year-old once again came up with the goods in a moment of magic.

Given far too much space outside the PSG goal area, Messi unleashed an absolute thunderbolt that gave keeper Keylor Navas no chance in the PSG goal.

Messi's exquisite strike swerved left and then arrowed into the top corner, leaving viewers in utter disbelief.
