Aussie Cate Campbell has fallen agonisingly short of a gold medal at the FINA world championships after coming in second behind American Simone Manuel.

Manuel retained her world title finishing ahead of Campbell and Swedish rival Sarah Sjostrom.

Campbell’s silver adds to her tally of two gold at the FINA World Championships.

Manuel became only the second swimmer to win the women’s 100m freestyle event at the world championships on multiple occasions.

She joined Kornelia Ender who won the event in 1973 and 1975.

Campbell enjoying FINA WC

Campbell has already collected two gold in South Korea after inspiring the Australian women's 4x100m freestyle and mixed medley relay outfits.

Indeed Campbell appears to have exorcised her demons from the Rio Olympics where she was a red hot favourite for 100m gold, only to crash to a sixth placing after baulking on the blocks.

"I think I've just shown that my swimming is maturing with age," Campbell said.

"It's really nice to put together a smart race now. I haven't left my brain at the starting blocks."
