Bronte Campbell brutally sledges Cate live on TV

Bronte Campbell delivered a brutal sledge to sister Cate after the Australian women's team picked up a silver medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the world championships in Budapest.

Cate is in the middle of a long break from competitive swimming after the disappointment of last year's Olympics in Rio.

The 25-year-old experienced a heartbreaking individual campaign, finishing sixth and fifth in the 100m and 50m freestyle races respectively.

But she is in Budapest to provide special comments for Channel 7, a role that was interrupted by her teammates after their medal ceremony.

Cate was analysing the women's 100m butterfly when Bronte, Shayna Jack, Emma McKeon and Brittany Elmslie appeared straight off the dais.

"I missed you too!" Cate said as she hugged the medallists.

"We didn't miss you," snapped Bronte with ease.

"Hashtag we don't even need you!"

Informed they were live on TV, Bronte quickly clarified that she was only joking.

"I didn't know we were live, sorry, I didn't mean it," she said with a laugh.

Cate revealed this week that she was too scared to return to the pool until she had a casual swim at her Brisbane training pool six weeks after the Games.

She is yet commit to a full training regime but plans to ramp up her preparations for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast next year.

She will then have a tilt at a fourth Olympics at Tokyo two years later.

"I hadn’t been in the water at all (since Rio), I had no desire to," the 25-year-old said in comments published by the Australian.

“I was bitter and I was angry and I was frustrated and I was scared and I knew I wanted to make changes in my life but I didn’t know how drastic the changes needed to be.

"I probably needed that first swim to put everything back in perspective and put all of those demons to rest."

The world championships continue live and free on 7TWO tonight from 5.30pm (heats) and 1.30am (finals). All times AEST.
