Brentford vs Man City LIVE!

Manchester City came from behind to beat Brentford on Monday night. Phil Foden hit a hat-trick after Neal Maupay had steered the Bees ahead to threaten a big upset in the Premier League title race.

Bees goalkeeper Mark Flekken starred with nine first-half saves and an unlikely assist as his goal kick drifted all the way through the City defence for Maupay to race through and score after 21 minutes.

The visitors were kept at bay time and again until Ethan Pinnock's weak defensive header landed for Foden to strike home in the final minute of first-half stoppage time. After the break the England international deftly headed City ahead before rounding off his second City hat-trick with 20 minutes to go.

Brentford vs Man City highlights

  • GOAL! Brentford go route one for Maupay to score

  • GOAL! Foden levels up in final minute of first half

  • GOAL! Header from Foden puts City ahead

  • GOAL! Hat-trick for Foden as win surely saled

Mark Flekken heroics not enough as Phil Foden hat-trick sends Man City second

22:06 , Marc Mayo

Phil Foden’s sumptuous hat-trick did more than earn Manchester City a comeback victory away to a side which did the double over them last season.

More importantly, his treble moved the treble-winners ahead of Arsenal on goal difference and to within two points of leaders Liverpool. And Pep Guardiola’s side still have a game in hand on both.

The title race took an ever-so-slight swing in their favour at the Gtech Community Stadium, even if Brentford had momentarily freaked them out by edging ahead on Monday night.

Thanks for joining us tonight.

Erling Haaland, who it wouldn't be unreasonable to say has been City's least impressive player tonight, is taken off for Mateo Kovacic.

Let's put that one down to a bit of rustiness on his return...

Brentford 1-3 Man City | 85 mins

21:46 , Marc Mayo

Delightful turn and shot by Julian Alvarez but it's straight at Mark Flekken, who looked like being the hero with nine saves in the first half alone - that's more than he had ever made in a Premier League game.

Brentford 1-3 Man City | 81 mins

Baffling decision by Ederson to race off his line at a set-piece and wipe out Ethan Pinnock outside the box! Somehow the foul isn't given and there's no penalty for VAR to deliberate over.

Nice little assist for Erling Haaland, who's done the square root of nothing else tonight.

Foden has been in ruthless form here. A hat-trick for the England star, and his finishing has been excellent.

Perfect for Guardiola to be able to bring him off after he’s grabbed his third as well!

Brentford 1-3 Man City | 72 mins

21:33 , Marc Mayo

That should be game, set and match.

Brentford enjoyed a flurry of half chances when a goal down but Phil Foden's delightful third has completed his second hat-trick for Man City.

Jeremy Doku subbed on for Bernardo Silva.

HAT-TRICK FOR PHIL FODEN!

The City man latches onto a clearance before a passing routine plays him in down the middle, and he buries it!

Brentford 1-2 Man City | 66 mins

21:27 , Marc Mayo

Brentford are continuing to cause nervy moments in the City box, even if Ederson have largely gone untested.

A floated cross to Ivan Toney is scooped over the bar as he leans back on a volley.

Brentford 1-2 Man City | 63 mins

21:24 , Marc Mayo

Josko Gvardiol with a vital block as a corner reaches Neal Maupay at the edge of the six-yard box.

Decent spell this from the home team.

Brentford 1-2 Man City | 61 mins

21:21 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

There's an opening for Brentford - a half appeal for handball off Nathan Ake and Christian Norgaard arrives on the loose ball to fire goalwards... diverted wide by Ruben Dias.

The Dane flicks on the corner but no one is there to turn it home at the far post.

Brentford 1-2 Man City | 60 mins

21:20 , Marc Mayo

The Bees won't be able to assume control this game just because they're behind - there's no sign City will sit on this lead.

Half an hour to go for Thomas Frank to conjure up an unlikely leveller.

Highlights: Phil Foden scores second of the evening

21:17 , Marc Mayo

The ball, the run, the header. Nicely done.

Dom Smith at Brentford vs Man City

21:17 , Marc Mayo

Brentford suffer the ignominy of conceding a glancing header to one of the shortest players on the field. Pinnock suspect for both goals. City have turned it around.

Brentford 1-2 Man City | 55 mins

21:16 , Marc Mayo

Well, Phil Foden has been the difference in the penalty box for Man City.

He may be playing left wing officially but having the freedom to drift inside has really suited the England international, who evaded Sergio Reguilon to deftly nod City ahead.

Ironically, it's a poacher's finish that underlines how quiet Erling Haaland has been tonight!

GGGOOOAAALLLL!!! Brentford 1-2 Man City | Foden, 53'

PHIL FODEN HEADS CITY AHEAD!

He ghosts into the box to flick home Kevin De Bruyne's delightful cross.

Brentford 1-1 Man City | 51 mins

21:12 , Marc Mayo

Plenty of space for both teams to attack into early on in this half but the final ball isn't there yet, first from Phil Foden for City before Ivan Toney hesitates out wide and chooses the wrong option with his cross.

Brentford 1-1 Man City | 48 mins

21:09 , Marc Mayo

Slick passing move out from the back sets Brentford on their way for a counter, that's surely their gameplan for the half.

Kyle Walker is back to stop the cross into the box.

21:06 , Marc Mayo

The home team are out first and they get the ball rolling for the second half.

No changes from either side.

A big second half ahead

20:59

Brentford will certainly take a point from here but City have come from behind plenty of times this season - and won't stop at 1-1!

The visitors boasted 17 shots to three, ten on target to two, 12 corners to four and 72 per cent of possession in the first half.

Seconds left of the first half and City find their leveller.

De Bruyne’s cross is speculative and heading out, but Pinnock feels the need to head it clear and that backfires. It drops for Foden, who controls and then slides the ball through Pinnock’s legs and in.

The referee brings an end to a half in which Brentford may just have lost the lead but where they performed much more resolutely than many will have expected.

City the better side, but Flekken has kept them out on numerous occasions.

Highlights: Phil Foden levels the score

20:53 , Marc Mayo

How vital a goal could that be in the context of Man City's season. They'll be big favourites to go on and grab the win after the break.

Brentford 1-1 Man City | Half time!

Erling Haaland is well denied in the box by Nathan Collins and that is the whistle.

We're all square at the break.

Stern words from Kevin De Bruyne for Vitaly Janelt after he fouls the Brentford midfielder near the corner flag. You don't often see the mild-mannered Belgian get riled up!

Brentford 1-0 Man City | 45 mins

Once more, Mark Flekken turns away a shot from range after Kevin De Bruyne picks his spot.

Successive City corners for Brentford to defend as three minutes' stoppage time begins.

Mark Flekken almost lets his incredible work for the half slip away as Phil Foden shoots from the edge of the box!

The shot pings out of his grasp and rolls a yard wide of the post...

Brentford 1-0 Man City | 42 mins

20:44 , Marc Mayo

Sumptuous dink into the box by Kevin De Bruyne picks out Josko Gvardiol's overlap, but the Croatian is forever a centre-back playing left-back as he punts a shot-cross off target.

Dom Smith at Brentford vs Man City

20:43 , Marc Mayo

Brentford playing really well here. Seeing the ball as much as any side can hope to have it against the treble winners, but, crucially, using it economically.

Signs that City are beginning to get just a little impatient at the scoreline, given their number of ventures into the box.

Brentford 1-0 Man City | 38 mins

20:40 , Marc Mayo

A long throw wins a corner for the Bees as they look to fire off their second shot of the night - having faced 13 themselves.

Ruben Dias flicks over the first before the second corner is palmed away by Ederson.

Brentford 1-0 Man City | 34 mins

20:36 , Marc Mayo

Bernardo Silva spoons a weird one right into the sky, which forces Ederson off his line.

The goalkeeper opts to head out but Silva is there to win a vital tackle to prevent a long shot towards the empty net.

Vitaly Janelt stays down as a result before Silva, again, is in the thick of it by shooting over amid home fans' boos.

The Brentford man should be ready to continue after some treatment.

Brentford 1-0 Man City | 31 mins

Neal Maupay booked for a bad one on Rodri.

Arrived late and with too much gusto as his studs connected with the top of his opponent's foot.

SAVE!

Kyle Walker benefits from the bounce of the ball to hit the byline and lays on a low cross, which reaches Josko Gvardiol.

The Croatian tees himself up and rifles in a powerful effort - which Mark Flekken denies!

He's been in inspired form!

Dom Smith at Brentford vs Man City

Brentford are clearly indebted to their goalkeeper for still being level with City here.

Just a minute after Maupay has benefitted from Toney parting the sea to put Brentford ahead, Flekken is there to deny Haaland, making his fourth crucial save already. Really good display from the summer signing so far.

SAVE!

In the pre-match build-up, Sky Sports highlighted a number of stats that showed Mark Flekken in an unfavourable light.

Well he's just made another two saves! Firstly from Erling Haaland one-on-one, before a tame Julian Alvarez header is plucked to send the home fans wild.

Route. One.

There were some Man City complaints for Ivan Toney being offside there but he didn't touch the ball from the goal kick, and Mark Flekken gets the assist!

NEAL MAUPAY SCORES!

A long ball over the top is left by Ivan Toney for the Frenchman to run through and open the scoring!

Brentford 0-0 Man City | 20 mins

The away team have done well to test the goalkeeper a few times already but it has largely come from range, where Josko Gvardiol rockets a half-volley way over the bar.

Brentford 0-0 Man City | 18 mins

20:20 , Marc Mayo

Not happening yet for Brentford in attack, with a couple of lofted balls into space not close enough to Ivan Toney to trouble Manchester City.

Brentford 0-0 Man City | 15 mins

Mark Flekken parries another City effort on target, before the corner is cleared as far as Kyle Walker...

He shoots from 30 yards - and forces a strong save!

Erling Haaland pops up for the first time after a low cross in by Kevin De Bruyne but Ethan Pinnock stands strong to block the shot.

Dom Smith at Brentford vs Man City

20:08 , Marc Mayo

After a lively and promising start for Brentford, fuelled by one or two uncharacteristic individual errors by Manchester City, the visitors have settled into their usual dictating rhythm and Brentford have settled into a sporadic press.

Fully expect this to be how most of the match looks.

Brentford 0-0 Man City | 6 mins

Gentle, probing possession from Man City nearly leads to a break into the box as Kyle Walker neatly picks out Julian Alvarez but Brentford clear for a throw.

Ivan Toney battles well down to the right to pick Neal Maupay out in the box but Rodri mops it up expertly.

And yet City give it away! Another ball into the box forces Ruben Dias into some improvised defending to concede the corner.

It wasn't pretty, but the visitors deal with the subsequent set-piece.

Brentford 0-0 Man City | 2 mins

Brentford playing a video on the big screen which absolutely milks the fact that they were the only team in England or Europe to do the double over treble winners Manchester City last season.

To be honest, fair enough. With Haaland and De Bruyne both starting, it could be a hell of a lot harder tonight…

The picture is clear for both teams

19:54 , Marc Mayo

A victory sends Man City to within two points of Liverpool, with a game in hand on the Reds.

Brentford know a third win in a row against the treble-winners will push them six points clear of the relegation zone, while still holding a game in hand as well.

Thomas Frank responds to Erling Haaland's inclusion on Sky Sports

19:49 , Marc Mayo

"I actually anticipated for him to start, it’s better to prepare for the worst.

"I think the main thing is the pace in behind on the transitions and his physicality in the box for the crosses - I think those are the two main bits we need to focus on."

Kyle Walker previews the game on Sky Sports

19:42 , Marc Mayo

"I don't think [Brentford doing the double over City last season] is a reference.

"The game when they beat us at home was before the World Cup, maybe different things were on players' minds. But it was a freak result.

"Coming here, [the title] was already wrapped up and we had the Champions League and FA Cup final coming up.

"Today will be a good test, we need to make sure that we prove that we're right in the fight to become champions once again."

Pep Guardiola reveals update on Erling Haaland's future

19:39 , Marc Mayo

Pep Guardiola says he wants Erling Haaland to stay at Manchester City for a decade, as he prepares to start the striker for the first time in two months at Brentford tonight.

Reports in Spain have suggested that Haaland is unsettled, amid links with Real Madrid, but Guardiola insists the 23-year-old Norwegian is happy at City.

“What do you think? That we don’t want Erling to stay here for one decade? Honestly?” Guardiola said. “We want him [to stay] for a long time. We’re in love with him."

City are expected to offer Haaland a new contract.

Guardiola said: “It is always about the desire of the player and the club. He arrived last season. His impact was incredible at the beginning of [this] season, then he had two months injured.

“What happens in the future, honestly I don’t know. We are happy to have him. Hopefully, he is happy to be with us.

“You have to ignore it [media speculation]. If someone wants Erling, it’s easy — phone, call and ask. That is what we do to sign someone. It’s not complicated.”

Score prediction

17:55

It would be a major surprise to see City slip up here given their recent form. The return of Haaland and De Bruyne's ever-improving fitness only makes the champions even more fearsome.

With Ivan Toney back, the Bees are capable of scoring against any side - especially a City team who have a knack of conceding - but they will have to be at their best at the back to stand any chance of avoiding defeat.

Man City to win, 3-1.
