Brandon Aubrey longest field goal: Where Cowboys kicker ranks on all-time list

The Dallas Cowboys took a dive into the unknown after the 2023 NFL postseason by releasing kicker Brett Maher.

Maher, who served as Dallas' primary kicker for three seasons, struggled during the playoffs, making his two field postseason field goals but going an unfathomable 1-for-6 on extra point attempts. The misses weren't the driving force of the Cowboys' postseason elimination, but Maher's issues were enough for owner/general manager Jerry Jones to decide to hold an open kicking competition during the offseason.

The Cowboys didn't make any splash move at the position. Instead, they had the little-known duo of Tristan Vizcaino and Brandon Aubrey fight for the job ahead of the 2023 season.

Aubrey won it with ease. And since then, he has been the NFL's best kicker.

Aubrey was named an All-Pro for his stellar, first NFL season and has shown off his big leg often with the Cowboys. The former soccer player turned USFL star has set Dallas franchise records and made the Cowboys' kicking woes a distant memory.

Just how good is Aubrey's leg? He has made one of the NFL's longest-ever field goals and seems likely to get a shot at eventually breaking the all-time record.

Brandon Aubrey longest field goal

Aubrey made the longest kick of his career during Week 3 of the 2024 NFL season. On Dallas' first possession, he attempted a 65-yarder in an effort to cut into the Baltimore Ravens' 7-0 lead.

The kick split the uprights with room to spare.

Aubrey's make set a new franchise record for the Cowboys. Maher had previously owned it after making one from 63 yards away in 2019.

The make marked Aubrey's 14th from 50-plus yards during his career. He later added a 15th to make himself an other-worldly 15 for 15 on kicks from 50-plus yards over his first two NFL seasons and 2 of 2 on kicks from 60 yards and beyond.

Longest field goals in NFL history

While Aubrey's field goal was among the longest ever kicked, it came up just a yard short short of beating Justin Tucker's record of 66 yards.

Below is the full list of nine kickers to make field goals from at least 63 yards or longer:

  • 66 yards — Justin Tucker, Ravens (2021)

  • 65 yards — Brandon Aubrey, Cowboys (2024)

  • 64 yards — Matt Prater, Denver Broncos (2013)

  • 63 yards – Brett Maher, Cowboys (2019)

  • 63 yards – Graham Gano, Carolina Panthers (2018)

  • 63 yards – David Akers, San Francisco 49ers (2012)

  • 63 yards – Sebastian Janikowski, Oakland Raiders (2011)

  • 63 yards – Jason Elam, Broncos (1998)

  • 63 yards – Tom Dempsey, New Orleans Saints (1970)

Justin Tucker longest field goal record

Tucker's record-breaking make came at the end of regulation in a 2021 game against the Detroit Lions. The Baltimore Ravens called upon Tucker to attempt a 66-yard field goal while trailing 17-16 with three seconds left in the hopes of avoiding a monumental road upset.

Tucker's had just enough distance to clang off the crossbar. It bounced into the air and through the uprights to give the Ravens the win.

Aubrey nearly tied Tucker's record during Dallas' Week 1 game against the Cleveland Browns. He nailed the kick from 66 yards away, but it was called back by a 5-yard delay of game penalty. He also made one from 66 yards during the preseason, which didn't count towards the NFL record.

Still, it may be just a matter of time before the 29-year-old gets a chance to match Tucker — or leapfrog him to make NFL history.
