Boxer Charles Conwell has penned a heartbreaking letter to Patrick Day who is in a coma after suffering a serious head injury Saturday night following their bout in Chicago.

The 27-year-old Day was unconscious when he was taken from the ring in a stretcher and loaded onto a waiting ambulance at the Wintrust Arena.

Fight broadcaster DAZN said Day suffered a seizure in the ambulance and needed a breathing tube once he arrived at the hospital.

Day had emergency brain surgery and went into a coma, but is not confirmed whether he fell into the coma or it was induced by the doctors.

Conwell had previously tweeted his best wishes to Day following the incident, but since penned a letter on social media to his fallen opponent.

“Dear Patrick Day,” Conwell wrote on Twitter.

“I never meant for this to happen to you. All I wanted to do was win. If I could take it all back, I would.

“No one deserves this to happen to them. I replay the fight over and over in my head thinking what if this never happened and why did it happen to you.

“I can’t stop thinking about it myself. I prayed for you so many times and shed so many tears because I couldn’t even imagine how my family and friends would feel.

“I see you everywhere you go and all I hear is wonderful things about you. I thought about quitting boxing, but I know that’s not what you would want.

“I know that you were a fighter at heart so I decided not to, and to fight and win a world title because that’s what you wanted and that’s what I want so I will use you as motivation every day and make sure I leave it all in the ring every time.

“With compassion, Charles Conwell.”

Day’s coach replied to the letter telling Conwell: “Stay strong and please don’t think we blame you”.
