Bizarre scenes as campers force cricket match to be cancelled

A local cricket match in England had to be cancelled after an unruly group of travellers illegally set up camp on the field.

The bizarre scenes unfolded at the home of Chesterfield Cricket Club in Derbyshire after several caravans full of holiday makers decided to invade the club’s home ground without permission.

The vehicles – containing around 40 travellers – were illegally scattered across the ground right next to the cricket pitch.

Frustrated officials from the cricket club said they had to postpone the match when the inconsiderate campers refused to leave.

“There were a lot of children running around on the green and playing with the covers,” Chesterfield CC chairman Mike Taylor told the The Daily Mail.

“At the time we were just pleading with them to move to another part of the park and they seemed willing to move on at first. ”

“But then we got talking and they asked for money for ferry tickets back to Ireland.

“They were not pleased when they did not get any money and after that they became quite unhelpful.”

Police eventually had to be called after it became apparent the holiday makers were refusing to budge.

The group also used the walls out the front of the club’s pavilion to hang out wet clothes to dry.

Photos taken from the oval show a huge array of clothes strewn along the top of a brick wall adjacent to the cricket ground.

Cricket club officials confirmed the Premier League match against Denby had to be postponed, while an under-19s final had to be moved to a separate ground.
