Australia's path to winning the World Cup revealed

Yahoo Sports Australia journalist Riley Morgan reveals what it would take for Australia to make the FIFA World Cup final.

Video transcript

RILEY MORGAN: Australia has rocked the FIFA World Cup, having advanced the knockout stages as runners-up in the group after defeating Denmark 1-0. Having bounced back from a loss to France in the opening game, the Socceroos claimed two victories in the group stage for the first time in the nation's history.

With football mania gripping the nation, here's the predicted run for the Socceroos if they're to go on and lift the trophy in Qatar. Having finished second in the group, Australia will now face Group C winners, Argentina. The South American giants will be a tough task as Lionel Messi attempts to claim one of the trophies missing on his resume.

If Australia defeat Argentina, they will play the winner of the Netherlands and the USA in the quarterfinal. The task only gets harder from here. In the semifinal, either Brazil or Spain could be waiting. And if Australia were to go on a miracle run and reach the World Cup final, a matchup with defending champions, France, could be on the cards.

While these predictions are based on FIFA rankings, Australia has already stunned the world in Qatar. And there's no limit to what Graham Arnold's men could achieve on the biggest stage of all.
