Australian Open LIVE: Learner Tien stuns Daniil Medvedev in epic five-set upset, Emma Raducanu issues injury update

Australian Open LIVE: Learner Tien stuns Daniil Medvedev in epic five-set upset, Emma Raducanu issues injury update

The Australian Open has seen its biggest shock so far as 19-year-old American qualifier Learner Tien stunned three-time finalist Daniil Medvedev in a five-set epic to reach the third round on his grand slam debut outside of the United States.

Tien completely outplayed Medvedev over the first couple of hours to take a commanding lead but the fifth seed saved match point in the third-set tiebreak as the contest went the distance, late into the night in Melbourne.

But the qualifier held his nerve and outlasted Medvedev in the final set tiebreak to win 6-3 7-6 6-7 1-6 7-6 (10-7) in the biggest match of his life, adding another major upset to a tournament that is witnessing a breakthrough of exciting young talent.

Tien’s victory against the former World No 1 and US Open champion was the biggest upset yet and came after four and 49 minutes, with the match finishing at almost 3am local time.

Earlier, British No 1 Katie Boulter could not progress to the third round for the first time as Veronika Kudermetova edged a tight contest. Boulter looked to have found the momentum, but Kudermetova raised her level in the decider, winning 7-6 2-6 6-2.

Emma Raducanu defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-3 7-5 but battled more injury problems during the victory. The 22-year-old played through pain struggling with her lower back, but Raducanu is hoping it’s just a “small niggle” after her preparations for the tournament were disrupted by back spasms.

Five-time grand slam winner Swiatek needed just one hour to cruise through, setting up a blockbuster match against Raducanu, who she is yet to drop a set against in three meetings.

Emma Raducanu battles more injury problems to reach Australian Open third round

17:01 , Eleanor Crooks

Emma Raducanu will take on five-time grand slam champion Iga Swiatek after battling through more injury problems to beat Amanda Anisimova in the second round of the Australian Open.

The former US Open champion had her preparations for the tournament disrupted by a back spasm and she had treatment for what appeared to be a lower back issue during the second set.

There were five more double faults – a significant improvement on the 15 in her first-round win over Ekaterina Alexandrova – but that did not stop her reaching the last 32 for the first time here thanks to a 6-3 7-5 victory over big-hitting American Anisimova.

Learner Tien was laughing to himself as he soaked in victory. He must be speechless, but let’s hear from him.

“I know I made it a lot harder than it could have been, but you know, whatever.

“Losing the third was tough. I had match point. That was disappointing to see the fourth after fighting from a break down.

“But in the fourth, I honestly had to pee so bad. So I was trying to finish it up fairly quick. But I also wanted to start the fifth serving. It all worked out!”

That’s a huge moment. He’ll serve for the match next. Is that it for the 19-year-old?

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 6-7 7-6 6-1 5-5 Learner Tien*

15:31

Ridiculous. About 20 or so ball-kids, who have had to stay on site due to the late finish, are now having to dry the court with beach towels.

But they have managed. We’re back underway, although that five minute delay or so could not have been ideal.

15:28 , Jamie Braidwood

You’re kidding! It’s raining! Play is stopped!!!

At 5-5 15-15 in the fifth set, at 2:30 in the morning!

This is going to lead to a stoppage, for sure.

15:27 , Jamie Braidwood

30-30 on the Medvedev serve, with Tien two points from victory and the fifth seed two away from defeat, Medvedev produces an astonishing behind the back volley to stay alive.

Had he got that wrong, it would have been match point.

It’s followed by a 27-point rally, which Medvedev finishes by whacking an incredible backhand volley winner.

He survives.

Australian Open: *Daniil Medvedev 3-6 6-7 7-6 6-1 4-5 Learner Tien

15:18

Medvedev blitzes the hold of serve, landing three quick points in a row to immediately throw it back to Tien.

The rallies are all now being played on Tien’s service games - but the 19-year-old comes up with back-to-back forehand winners.

TIen is crushing his left-handed forehand and it helps him to a massive hold of serve. He moves a game away.

Tien raises his hand and asks for more as he grinds through another game to edge ahead against Medvedev.

Somehow, the 19-year-old just able to maintain the rally, going toe to toe with the three-time champion up and down the Margaret Court Arena.

Maybe this was not as inevitable as I thought.

Learner Tien is not going anywhere just yet. The 19-year-old saves three break points, coming out on top in a series of lung-busting rallies against Medvedev to hold.

Tien manages to get on the board but Medvedev rolls through his service game to win a one-sided set 6-1.

The fifth seed has settled now after saving match point in the tiebreak, and Tien looks knackered.

Surely Medvedev wins it from here? Or was Tien saving some energy for the fifth?

The 19-year-old qualifier, who is making his grand slam debut, seemed to be cramping.

Medvedev came through four five-set matches to reach the Australian Open final last year, including from two sets down against Emil Ruusuvuori.

If he is going to survive this, Medvedev will have to play long and late into the night once again. It’s already past midnight in Melbourne.
