KL Rahul has angered cricket fans with some tongue-in-cheek comments about David Warner’s injury.

Warner limped off the SCG during the second ODI against India on Sunday, with scans set to determine the opener’s availability for the rest of the summer.

With fans holding their breath, a number were angered by Rahul’s cheeky remarks that he hopes Warner is ruled out for a long time.

“I don't know how bad his injury is but it’d be nice if he gets injured for a long time,” Rahul said after Sunday’s game.

“I wouldn’t wish that for any cricketer. But he’s one of their main batsmen, so if he’s injured for a long time it’d be good for our team.”

While Rahul and Warner have previously played together as teammates in the IPL and the Indian star was clearly joking, a number of fans didn’t see the funny side.

Some labelled Rahul’s comments “despicable” and “terrible sportsmanship”.

Warner in race against time for Test series

Warner is in a race against the clock to play the first Test of the summer after being ruled out of the Twenty20 series.

Warner will replaced in the squad by D’Arcy Short, but no call has been made yet about his availability for the first Test which starts December 17.

Meanwhile Cricket Australia also confirmed that Pat Cummins will be rested from the remainder of the white-ball matches, starting with Wednesday's final ODI.

Warner tweaked an adductor during a fielding mishap that overshadowed his team's 51-run win on Sunday, when the hosts claimed an unassailable 2-0 lead in the ODI series.

The swashbuckling opener had started the ODI series in strong form, scoring 69 and 83, while he produced a career-best 335 not out in last year's pink-ball Test.

The immediate problem for national selectors will be finding a new opening partner for Aaron Finch but they must also soon need to decide whether right-handers Joe Burns and Will Pucovski should open together in the first Test.

Pucovski would be making his Test debut, while Burns struggled during the recent Sheffield Shield hub.

The pair are expected to open together for Australia A in a game that begins on Sunday at Sydney's Drummoyne Oval.

Glenn Maxwell, who tried to help Warner off the field, admitted “it didn't look good” and the opener was “in a bit of pain”.

“Hopefully scans come back and it's not too bad, he can rest up and get himself right,” Maxwell said.
