Austin Waugh gets special call-up for fourth Test

Steve Waugh’s teenage son could feature for Australia in the fourth Test at the SCG.

Austin Waugh, 19, was listed as an ’emergency fielder’ on the Aussie team sheet as they look to avoid a historic series loss to India on home soil.

He will run the drinks for the Aussie side and could take the field if necessary.

Austin has been a star for Australia at Under 19 level over the last few years, and has been rewarded with a special call-up to field for the Test side.

Considering Marnus Labuschagne was once a substitute fielder during a Test at the Gabba, it could spell big things for the younger Waugh’s future.

Two years ago, Mickey Edwards became a cult hero when he fielded in an SCG Test.

He went on to make his debut for NSW in Sheffield Shield and domestic one-dayer level in 2018.

India make solid start at SCG

Josh Hazlewood struck with his third delivery but India otherwise defied Australia’s pacemen early on day one of the fourth Test, reaching 1-69 at lunch.

Virat Kohli called correctly at Thursday’s toss, significantly boosting India’s hopes of securing their maiden Test series win in Australia.

Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc both delivered lively new-ball spells at the SCG but only had the wicket of recalled opener KL Rahul to show for all their hard work.

Hazlewood, the most threatening member of Australia’s attack in the morning session, troubled unbeaten batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara and Mayank Agarwal with his bouncer.

Pujara and Agarwal weathered blows to the helmet and arm respectively, but didn’t lose their composure nor their wicket.
