Aussie James continues hot start to snowboard season

Scotty James has claimed his fourth straight X-Games halfpipe gold medal with his overall haul matching legendary American snowboarder Shaun White.

Australia's four-time Olympian James dominated throughout the invitational event held under lights in Aspen, USA.

James now has won an incredible 10 career medals in the prestigious event that features the world's best halfpipe riders, equalling White's halfpipe total.

He still has some work to do to catch White's streak of six consecutive X- Games pipe wins, and is still one shy of White's eight total gold medals in the pipe.

In a flawless performance, James won the playoff round to advance to the top-four final with a score of 93 points.

In the best of two-run final James went better still, scoring a huge 96.33 points on a first run that included his signature switch McTwist first hit, cab triple cork 1440, frontside 1260, backside 1080 and switch back 1200.

With no rider able to match James, he was able to complete a "victory lap" in the second and final run, celebrating on his way down the Aspen superpipe.

Joining James on the podium were Japanese riders Yuto Totsuka in second with a best score of 93.66 points, with Ayumu Hirano third on 92.33.

"Just winning a gold medal is amazing here at X-Games, and to do four in a row, I am absolutely speechless" said the Victorian, who won silver at the last Winter Olympics in Beijing and bronze in PyeongChang.

"The triple cork is the one - it's the trick I feel you have to have in the mix to have any intention of making any damage on the podium. So to put it in my run and do it switch and try and put in my own flair at the start too feels good for the soul."

This victory follows last week's win in Switzerland when he produced one of the best runs of his impressive career to claim the halfpipe gold medal at the Laax Open.

That was James's 10th World Cup title and the fourth time he had emerged triumphant at the prestigious Swiss event.
