It continued a brilliant start to 2019 for the Queenslander, who claimed the first top-10 scalp of her career when she beat Russian Daria Kasatkina at the Brisbane International.

The crowd at Melbourne Park erupted after Birrell completed the second round boilover.

The Aussie youngster then endeared herself to the tennis world with a brilliant post-match interview as fans sung her praises on social media.

“There were so many things going through my head, I just had to bring myself back to the present and focus on getting my first serve in and I was able to do that.”

The 20-year-old admitted she was relishing the expected match-up against three-time grand slam champion, Kerber.

“I hope that I do because it’ll just be such an incredible experience, so we’ll see what happens.

“Anything can happen, you just have to dream big and work really hard.”
