Aussie boxing great Jeff Fenech slams Kostya move as Tim Tszyu addresses loss to Bakhram Murtazaliev

Fenech believes Kostya was a "huge distraction" for the Aussie.

Jeff Fenech believes Kostya Tszyu's decision to sit ringside for his son Tim's world title fight was at the Aussie's detriment. In a completely one-sided bout, Tszyu was stopped in the third round by Bakhram Murtazaliev after being knocked down four times in less than three rounds, giving his team no choice but to throw in the towel. And Tszyu now faces an uncertain boxing future.

The 29-year-old has lost two straight fights, with his bloody war against the towering Sebastian Fundora earlier this year ending what was a very short world title reign for Tszyu. His record as a pro is now 24-2 and Fenech puts the Aussie boxer's latest loss down to his father's presence.

"It's great to have your father around, but I think it was a huge distraction," Fenech told 2GB on Monday. "He was trying to prove something to his dad and it's a hard thing when you've had a dad that was so great. It's really hard when you haven't seen your dad for eight years and then all of a sudden he's there ... that was more of a distraction than being a help.

"He doesn't need to prove anything to his dad or the rest of Australia. What he has done in boxing over the last few years has been amazing and his fight prior to that with a cut head was one of the bravest performances in boxing history. So much was on the line and I honestly believe he did the wrong thing."

Before his recent defeats, Tszyu had been earmarked for massive fights with the likes of Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez. But that ship has now sailed and he will likely need to rack off several domestic wins before he gets a chance back in the US. And Fenech says Tszyu needs to avoid distractions such as his father being in his corner moving forward.

"If you want to fight Canelo or Crawford … you can't even dream about that or fathom that, that's not gonna happen," Fenech said. "Tim needs to have a couple of fights and get his confidence back and be told what to do properly in between rounds and forget about everything except for your opponent.

"Everyone has got to believe they are gonna win - but if you believe you are going to kill somebody and you are over-confident ... you need to be nervous. If you're not nervous, you're not ready. He showed no nerves - he wanted to show his dad and show the world he is a great fighter, but he had already shown us that."

A defiant Tszyu promised to return better than ever and "with answers" after being demolished by Murtazaliev on Sunday. On Monday, Tszyu vowed he would regroup and once again set his sights on world titles.

"It is what it is, I got caught with a shot and I couldn’t move on,” Tszyu said on Instagram. “I kept getting up, but that wasn’t good enough. Congrats to my opponent, tremendous performance. We move on, regroup and my team will be back."
