Aston Villa vs Tottenham LIVE!

Jacob Ramsey and Douglas Luiz ignited Aston Villa's Europa League charge after a vital win over rivals Tottenham.

Unai Emery's side moved level on points with sixth-placed Spurs with two games left in the race for Europe following Saturday's 2-1 victory.

They were superior in every way, with Emi Buendia hitting the bar, and remain in the hunt for a surprise European spot after recovering from successive defeats following strikes from Ramsey and Luiz - despite Harry Kane's late penalty.

Wretched Tottenham, aimless and lifeless, looked anything but a side competing for the top six.

Aston Villa vs Tottenham highlights

  • GOAL! Ramsey strikes early for Villa

  • GOAL! Douglas Luiz doubles the advantage

  • GOAL! Kane penalty gives Spurs late hope

A huge win for Villa

16:59 , Marc Mayo

After back-to-back defeats, their European hunt is back on.

FULL TIME! Aston Villa 2-1 Tottenham

16:56 , Marc Mayo

No late heroics from Spurs this time as Villa claim a vital win!

GOA-NO!

16:56 , Marc Mayo

90+7 mins: Romero dinks a ball over the top that Son scores... and the flag goes up. A fitting end, surely.

16:55 , Marc Mayo

90+5 mins: Kulusevski whips a ball in deep, deep, deep... and out of play past Bissouma’s desperate lunge.

Villa not far away now.

16:53 , Marc Mayo

90+4 mins: Duran’s burst forward is halted by Hojbjerg and Tottenham are quickly back upfield.

Perisic rolls a cross along the 18-yard line which reaches nobody... until Kulusevski has a whack on his left foot and sends it way over the bar!

16:52 , Marc Mayo

90+3 mins: Kulusevski nutmegs Ramsey well but Villa have men back to clear.

The hosts are having to see this one out camped in their own box...

16:50 , Marc Mayo

90+1 mins: Watkins booked for slowly walking off the pitch in Villa’s next change, he’s off for Cash.

16:49 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: Davies off for Perisic as the board goes up for six additional minutes at the restart.

GGGGOOOOOAAALLLL!!! Aston Villa 2-1 Tottenham

16:48 , Marc Mayo

89 mins: Naturally, it’ll be Kane...

SCORED! GAME ON!

Penalty to Spurs!

16:46 , Marc Mayo

87 mins: Peter Bankes goes to the monitor after another check to determine if Kane was offside...

It’s given!

Penalty appeal!

16:45 , Marc Mayo

86 mins: Kane goes down under Martinez’s challenge and VAR wants a look...

16:43 , Marc Mayo

84 mins: No rush to get up from Martinez to gather himself after rising high to collect Son’s corner.

Villa will go level on points with Spurs with this scoreline, behind them only on goals scored.

16:40 , Marc Mayo

81 mins: Mason makes an attacking change with Danjuma on for Porro.

16:39 , Marc Mayo

80 mins: Romero booked for a rash challenge. That’s the sort of sentence we keep on file.

16:37 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: Kulusevski has added some vital width to Spurs since coming on, yet he needs to whip in his cross first time rather than try to beat his marker.

With men back, Villa force it out for a corner - which is cleared at the near post.

16:35 , Marc Mayo

75 mins: Chants of ‘Allez, allez, allez’ ringing out from the Holte End as Villa fans smell their chance at European football.

The away end may well want them to have it, rather than another march through Thursday nights.

Dan Kilpatrick at Villa Park

16:34 , Marc Mayo

Forster has kept Spurs in this game with smart saves from Bailey and Buendia but should have done better from Luiz’s free-kick, which wasn’t exactly in the corner.

It’s what Spurs deserve for another dismal display on the road.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

16:33 , Marc Mayo

73 mins: Could Forster have done better? Maybe, but it was a very worthy effort from Luiz.

Kane booked in amongst that, too.

It’s once again looking like a bad afternoon out for Spurs fans.

GGGGOOOOOAAALLLLL!!! Aston Villa 2-0 Tottenham

16:31 , Marc Mayo

71 mins: Romero concedes a foul with a late one on Watkins, just 25 yards from goal.

Villa captain Luiz steps up... HE BURIES IT!

16:27 , Marc Mayo

68 mins: Emery responds to that spell from Tottenham by subbing Buendia and Bailey for Duran and Kamara.

The French midfielder in particularly can shore things up, moving McGinn out wide.

Dan Kilpatrick at Villa Park

16:26 , Marc Mayo

The introductions of Bissouma and Kulusevski for the ineffective Skipp and Richarlison have given Spurs a lift and perhaps they sense they can make Villa pay for so many missed chances.

Chance!

16:24 , Marc Mayo

65 mins: Hello, hello...

Spurs are suddenly looking a bit lively and Kulusevski expertly holds Moreno off before rolling a shot narrowly wide!

The away end has perked up, that’s for sure.

16:22 , Marc Mayo

63 mins: Martinez spills his attempt to collect a high ball into the box, from a free-kick that simply wasn’t a foul.

Villa escape, however, before Tottenham come again via Son who shoots over from a great position.

He was, of course, offside.

16:20 , Marc Mayo

61 mins: Here come the changes.

Skipp off for Bissouma and another average outing for Richarlison, on his 26th birthday week, is replaced by Kulusevski.

Dan Kilpatrick at Villa Park

16:19 , Marc Mayo

You wonder how costly that uncharacteristic miss from Harry Kane may prove to be.

Spurs have barely had a sniff in the final third but Kane suddenly found himself with only Martinez to beat after some fine pressing from Hojbjerg.

 (PA)
(PA)

16:18 , Marc Mayo

59 mins: Proper scrappy period from the away side, who have conceded ten fouls to four so far.

Changes being readied in the dugout.

16:16 , Marc Mayo

56 mins: Another moment for Tottenham as a corner is won in front of the away end, Porro’s delivery needing two headers to clear.

16:13 , Marc Mayo

53 mins: Skipp booked for dragging back Bailey.

Villa, for all their domination, very much need a second goal in this game.

Chance!

16:12 , Marc Mayo

52 mins: SPURS HAVE A SHOT - AND SHOULD BE LEVEL!

Kane steals the ball inside the box and Martinez parries his one-on-one chance! Wow.

16:11 , Marc Mayo

51 mins: Forster with a bit of a camera save to deny Buendia’s curler from the edge of the box.

Another punt from range is then held by the Spurs goalkeeper, Villa clearly wanting to get shots off earlier in this half.

16:08 , Marc Mayo

49 mins: It’s still early but it doesn’t feel as though this half is being played at any different pace than the first, with Villa well on top.

Bailey looks to cause issues from the right before McGinn flies a shot over from range.

16:06 , Marc Mayo

48 mins: Superb last-ditch slide tackle by Romero on Ramsey after a slide-rule pass in behind by Buendia.

16:04 , Marc Mayo

46 mins: No changes for either side, Kane and Richarlison again lining up very centrally in the visitors’ attack.

Kick-off! Aston Villa 1-0 Tottenham

16:03 , Marc Mayo

We’re back underway.

Second half coming up!

16:03 , Marc Mayo

Let’s see if Spurs make any changes at the break.

Arnaut Danjuma, Dejan Kulusevski and Ivan Perisic perhaps the best bench options.

Penny for Ryan Mason’s thoughts

15:59 , Marc Mayo

His counter-attacking gameplan has floundered so far, with Spurs unable to break down Villa’s smart offside trap and laboured in shortform possession.

A re-think may be required, with a bit more old-fashioned wing play surely a better avenue.

(Tottenham Hotspur FC via Getty I)
(Tottenham Hotspur FC via Getty I)

Lots of work for Spurs to do

15:56 , Marc Mayo

No shots, five offsides and a goal down at the break.

The cliched positive is that at least it’s only one...

Around the grounds

15:51 , Marc Mayo

Manchester United have an early lead on Wolves in the other game that will impact the race for Europe.

Crystal Palace lead Bournemouth while Nottingham Forest have a goal advantage over mid-table Chelsea.

Southampton currently heading for the Championship, goalless with Fulham.

HALF TIME! Aston Villa 1-0 Tottenham

15:48 , Marc Mayo

The hosts completely on top in that first 45 minutes, Ramsey netting the early opener.

15:47 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: Luiz does marvelously to overhead kick the ball to the left flank, from where the cross comes in deep.

Davies lets it run and Bailey almost nips in!

Two added minutes.

CROSSBAR!

15:45 , Marc Mayo

43 mins: Buendia goes close!

A potential foul in the build-up before Villa trot forward, the ball rolled back to Buendia for a shot that clips the topside of the bar.

Chance!

15:42 , Marc Mayo

41 mins: NEARLY TWO!

Moreno fizzes a delightful cross in from the left, which Watkins throws himself at but just lacks the proper contact to head home... and it drifts wide.

Dan Kilpatrick at Villa Park

15:41 , Marc Mayo

After a brief period of being on top, Spurs have been dreadful for the past 10 minutes and can barely keep the ball.

Clement Lenglet alone has lost possession three times in quick succession in the face of Villa’s organised press.

15:41 , Marc Mayo

40 mins: “How s*** must you be, it’s only 1-0,” sing the Spurs fans...

15:40 , Marc Mayo

39 mins: Some lovely invention about Villa’s attacks today, down both flanks and the middle.

Buendia is in a central spot, 30 yards from goal as he hooks an inventive ball into the box - just too deep for Ramsey.

15:38 , Marc Mayo

36 mins: Hojbjerg gets a little hands-y in his battle with McGinn, basically grappling his opposite number to the ground while he shields the ball. Free-kick to Villa.

15:35 , Marc Mayo

34 mins: VAR has a little check of Royal’s lunge on Watkins in the box.

No penalty, maybe just nicked the ball.

Chance!

15:33 , Marc Mayo

32 mins: Again, Spurs lazily give the ball away in the own final third and Forster gets down low well to claw away Bailey’s effort!

Dan Kilpatrick at Villa Park

15:31 , Marc Mayo

Spurs are slowly growing into the game and starting to threaten to get behind Villa’s high line, with Kane as a deep playmaker while Son and Richarlison push forward.

It hasn’t worked yet, with Villa’s offside trap working well, but Mason should be encouraged at the response to Ramsey’s goal.

15:30 , Marc Mayo

29 mins: Back-to-back corners are sent right underneath the crossbar at the near post but Forster does well to stay in command.

The half-hour mark approaching and Spurs have really struggled to make their mark on this game.

15:29 , Marc Mayo

27 mins: Tottenham are really struggling to win the ball back.

McGinn does well to carry it forward to the left flank and Royal knocks it behind for a corner.

15:26 , Marc Mayo

24 mins: Quite possibly the latest offside flag ever, as Son is played through by Kane and is obviously miles offside.

Yet he runs at goal, rounds Martinez, hits the post and Kane even has the follow-up saved before the flag is raised.

15:24 , Marc Mayo

23 mins: McGinn booked for his second fairly cynical challenge of the game, this time on Kane.

15:22 , Marc Mayo

21 mins: Just the single shot in the first 20 or so minutes here, which broke the deadlock.

Richarlison attempts to get Spurs on the board but is, again, offside. A good trap by Villa.

15:20 , Marc Mayo

19 mins: Practically no pressure on the ball from Tottenham as Villa comfortably knock it around.

Richarlison is playing very central with Kane seemingly designed to drop a bit deeper, and Son a bit to the left.

It’s hard for it to work when no one really runs around, mind.

 (Action Images via Reuters)
(Action Images via Reuters)

15:17 , Marc Mayo

16 mins: Good work by Moreno to stop Richarlison from controlling the ball in the Villa box, where Spurs find themselves for the first time after a neat little chip into Kane by Davies.

15:16 , Marc Mayo

14 mins: Royal wins the ball by his own box then very nearly gives it back to Moreno... before a poor clearance straight to a Villa player.

Tottenham manage to clear the cross amid a weak penalty appeal and Son is sent tumbling by McGinn.

15:13 , Marc Mayo

12 mins: McGinn sends a cross over Forster’s bar, and onto the roof of the net.

Not much of a fightback from Tottenham yet, they’ve put together very little on the ball.

Dan Kilpatrick at Villa Park

15:12 , Marc Mayo

Awful starts on the road are becoming a pattern for Spurs and for the third away game running they trail inside eight minutes.

Given what happened at Newcastle and Liverpool, Villa will smell blood and this already feels like another test of character for Spurs.

GGGOOOOOAAAALLLLL!!!!! Aston Villa 1-0 Tottenham

15:08 , Marc Mayo

8 mins: RAMSEY FOR VILLA!

Romero dives in and leaves his defence completely exposed for Bailey to run forward down the right. He cuts it back for Ramsey to slot home!

Big trouble for Spurs...

15:07 , Marc Mayo

6 mins: Romero spends a moment nursing some kind of issue on the turf before another Villa corner.

Flicked on at the near-post, its collected outside the box and recycled back to the left flank.

Buendia hits the deck, no foul.

15:04 , Marc Mayo

3 mins: Richarlison latches onto a dink over the top - while offside - and slashes hopefully at the ball.

It flies high over the bar, the Holte End cheers... and the flag goes up.

15:03 , Marc Mayo

2 mins: The away end is straight into a chant of ‘We Want Levy Out’ before Villa enjoy a first corner.

Nothing comes of it before Richarlison chagres upfield, and Spurs settle into possession.

Ten-minute warning!

14:49 , Marc Mayo

The atmosphere is gently building at Villa Park for this important battle for European qualification.

Spurs will make sixth place very much their own with a win, while Villa will leapfrog Brighton if they claim all three points.

Lovely day for it

14:47 , Marc Mayo

I know we like to say this is a lot when the sun comes out in England, but...

It is a lovely day for it.

Spurs are a bogey club for Aston Villa

14:44 , Marc Mayo

Villa may have won in north London earlier this season, but that was only their third victory in this fixture over the last 15 years.

That includes a 4-0 win at Villa Park last year, off the back of a Heung-min Son hat-trick, and the Korean’s last-ditch winner in 2020.

A statue for Harry Kane?

14:40 , Marc Mayo

Tottenham striker Kane was tipped for a statue in the week by chairman Daniel Levy but he doesn’t exactly sound enthused by the idea...

“It’s not really my decision,” he responded.

“I’m really respectful of the club, I’ve been here since I was 11, so almost 19 years now. I’ve been here a long time and I feel like we’ve achieved a lot in my career, even if we don’t have the trophies to show for it.

“A statue is not going to make or break my career. I appreciate the words the chairman said about me, but ultimately what I can do is on the pitch.

“I feel like I’m giving my all in every moment, in every game and just trying to help the team as much as possible.”

Ryan Mason lauds Dejan Kulusevski... but leaves him out

14:37 , Marc Mayo

Tottenham are facing a decision over whether to sign Kulusevski permanently this summer, when his loan will expire.

“The general feeling is that Deki is a Tottenham player so those conversations, like many other conversations about other players, will come at the end of the season," Ryan Mason said in the week.

“I love Deki as a player. I think he's got so much room to grow and be a top, top player, even though he already is a top, top player.

“At the same time when you play for a club like this, I feel it's important that you feel you have to earn the shirt in every moment.

“Naturally when you play for a club like this there's competition. At the moment, last week, you could see he was on the bench but he came on and helped the team get the result. That's important.”

He’s on the bench today...

Leon Bailey back for Aston Villa

14:11 , Marc Mayo

The one change to the hosts’ line-up comes in Bertrand Traore dropping out for Leon Bailey.

Matty Cash is back from injury but only on the bench.

Unchanged team for Tottenham

Ryan Mason keeps faith with the XI that beat Crystal Palace after Clement Lenglet overcomes a knock.

No Eric Dier in the squad, at all.

Aston Villa vs Tottenham: Countdown to kick-off

13:44 , Marc Mayo

We’ll have team news in around 15 minutes before kick-off at 3pm in the Midlands.

Spurs have just rocked up at the stadium, Harry Kane among the stars pictured arriving.

Head-to-head record

13:39 , Marc Mayo

These teams haven’t drawn a game since May 2012, with Spurs winning 14 of 17 since.

Aston Villa wins: 58

Draws: 36

Tottenham wins: 77

Lots of big 3pm kick-offs today

13:34 , Marc Mayo

We’ve got the best of them right here as eighth plays sixth but the relegation battle in particular could take a big turn later on.

Southampton are in the last-chance saloon as they host Fulham, while Nottingham Forest go to Chelsea.

Crystal Palace host Bournemouth in a mid-table festival and Wolves, also now surely safe, head to stuttering Manchester United.

Do Spurs even want to qualify for the Europa Conference League?

13:28 , Marc Mayo

Ryan Mason believes Tottenham turning their noses up at finishing seventh in the table would be a mistake.

West Ham are enjoying their scrap for the Conference League crown after Jose Mourinho led Roma to glory last season.

“We’re in a moment where we need to finish as high as possible and get as many results as we can,” he said.

“It would be very wrong for any club to speak badly about any competition.

“Mourinho has done an incredible job in giving that competition a real status.”

Tottenham team news

Hugo Lloris will miss the rest of the season for Spurs, though there is hope that Yves Bissouma could feature before the end of the campaign.

Emerson Royal played in a three-man backline in place of Eric Dier last weekend and impressed, so now looks set to continue.

However, there are doubts around Clement Lenglet, while the likes of Ryan Sessegnon and Rodrigo Bentancur are still in the treatment room.

12:36 , Marc Mayo

Hello and welcome to Standard Sport’s coverage of Aston Villa vs Tottenham in the Premier League.

Today’s game kicks off at 3pm BST from Villa Park as Spurs travel to the west Midlands for a crucial game in the race for Europe.

Eighth-placed Villa have struggled in the last couple of weeks to dent their momentum, having rapidly risen up the table under Unai Emery.

Ryan Mason can finally claim to have steadied Spurs’ ship by beating Crystal Palace last time out, leaving them sixth in the table. A tilt at a top-four finish still feels unlikely, however.

Join us for all the build-up, match action and reaction this afternoon with Dan Kilpatrick at Villa Park for expert analysis and Marc Mayo on the play-by-play calls.
