'Mate, I can't bat': Nathan Lyon's hilarious response to 'chin music' threat

Nathan Lyon had a press conference in stitches after responding to some of the claims England would dish out some of their own bouncers after a bruising day for the hosts.

After winning the toss and putting England in to bat, Australia closed the day on 1-30 having dismissed the hosts for 258 on day two of the rain-affected second Test at Lord's.

HISTORY MADE: Nathan Lyon equals incredible Aussie Test record

Rory Burns, who scored 53, was hit on the chest several times by Pat Cummins, who later struck Chris Woakes on the head after Josh Hazlewood delivered a ball that flew off Joe Denly's helmet just before lunch.

Burns said he enjoyed the battle with the bowlers, but said Lyon had warned them during play they were going to come under a barrage of bouncers.

"It's always nice to get in the scrap a little bit," Burns said.

"He (Cummins) obviously got two dead in the same spot, which was nice. But, yeah, just getting in amongst it and trying to tough it out.

"I think Nathan Lyon ran past me this morning and mentioned it within about three balls so I was well versed and prepared for what I was getting. It's just a good battle, isn't it?”

When Burns said the Aussies will be in for the same treatment on Day 2, which prompted reporters to ask Lyon how he would handle the treatment.

But Lyon was frank in his assessment.

“Mate I can’t bat, so what do you reckon? What do you reckon?” he joked.

“Mate I can’t bat. I’m a No. 10, No. 11 batter, I’ve got an average of 10.

“They’ve got a world-class bowling attack. It’s Jofra’s first Test but he’s a world-class bowler. “We all know that, you know that, the whole world knows that.

“Broad, same thing. So of course it’s going to be challenging but that’s Test cricket, that’s why we play it.

“Even though I can’t bat I’ll go out and give it a go, unless you want to do it for me?”
