Ariarne Titmus spills the beans on ban Aussie athletes copped on flight home from Olympics

The swimming champion was keen to keep the celebrations going - but it wasn't possible.

Ariarne Titmus has revealed the Australian athletes were barred from drinking alcohol on their flight home from the Paris Olympics - or at least it wasn't made available. Titmus was part of the vast majority of the Australian Olympic Team who arrived home in Sydney on a chartered flight on Wednesday morning to a hero's welcome.

And speaking on Nova 100’s 'Jase & Lauren' radio program on Friday morning, the swimming champion lifted the lid on what the flight back to Australia was like. When asked if there was a party-like vibe on the plane after Australia's most successful Olympics campaign ever, Titmus said it was the opposite.

The gold medallist said the majority of the athletes chose to sleep rather than celebrate, and they couldn't have an alcoholic beverage even if they wanted to. "It was dry," she said in regards to whether alcohol was available. "And then everyone was so tired that I'm not even kidding, some people didn't even have dinner and were flat when we took off and slept the whole way. Most people slept for 12 hours."

Host Lauren Phillips asked: "You couldn't get a champagne on that flight after winning two gold medals?" To which Titmus revealed there wasn't any available. "When we got on the plane, there was orange and apple juice," she said.

Titmus revealed she even tried to get a cheeky beverage on the four-hour layover at Perth airport before they continued the journey to Sydney. But even then she ran out of luck, despite the athletes having the Qantas lounge to themselves.

"We got into Perth and they go 'we've blocked off the entire lounge for you guys to go up there and chill for your layover for four hours'," she said. "We got up there, and it was awesome. We were on arrival and got a bunch of choccies...the whole place done up. Welcome home. We're like, oh, let's go and get a little champagne or something. And we go over and the bar's shut and they're making hot choccies."

The swimming superstar also lifted the lid on the 'hierarchy' of the plane, with gold medallists seated up the front in business class. Titmus won two gold medals in Paris and was afforded the luxury of sitting up the front.

But it created some potentially awkward scenes when the gold medallists had to walk down the back of the plane to disembark. Because the athletes walked off at the back exit of the plane, the gold medallists had to walk past everyone else so they could be shown off to the adoring crowd first.

But Titmus said there was no awkwardness at all, and the other athletes gave the gold medallists a huge ovation as they walked past. "Once we landed, one of the Qantas media ladies came up to the first three rows and was like, 'so when we land, you guys have to get your bags off and then walk to the back'," she said. "It's actually very cool, because when we walked down the aisle of the plane, everyone was cheering."

On Wednesday morning, 14-year-old skateboarding star Arisa Trew revealed she actually gave up her seat at the front of the plane in business. After winning gold in Paris, Trew was entitle to the good seats up front, but declined so she could stay with her closest friends on the team.

"I could have been sitting in business with all the medallists, but instead I chose to sit in economy with my two best friends, Chloe and Ruby," she said. "I'm pretty sure somebody else got it (her business class seat) because me and my friends were walking around the plane, and we went up there, and it was all full. So I definitely think somebody else was sitting there but I don’t mind."
