Trainer reveals Federer's incredible work ethic

Roger Federer's fitness coach has revealed the Swiss Maestro's incredible work ethic and drive when away from the tennis court.

Pierre Paganini has been in Federer's corner since 2000, describing the 18-time grand slam champion as a "special case."

"There wasn't any single day in 17 years that he came crawling over here," Paganini told Tribune de Geneve recently.

"Sometimes he was tired but at the end of the day he worked more than usual. From this point of view, he is an amazing player. He is a special case, he has an enormous potential, a coordination that makes him being a phenomenal athlete.

"It doesn't mean he needs to work less, but instead he has to work on his strengths even more to make a difference.

"It's already 17 years and we get surprised each other. He forces me to be constantly creative during the practice sessions in order to keep him motivated."

Paganini said he could 'never imagine' Federer winning the Australian Open after a six-month break from tennis.

"I thought he could play very well, I was convinced of it as well as the rest of the team, it was a good idea to come back at the beginning of the season.

"It meant to start from the same point as the others did, with the exception that they didn't have a six month break.

"But Roger never lost his physical strength, even if he worked less than usually. We had time but we had to solve issues and make sure there wasn't a new injury."

According to Paganini, the secret to Federer's recent resurgence is pretty simple.

"Passion, it's a very simple word that is used by many people.

"For him it's a physilophy of daily life, it allows him to live tennis while he breaths the life.

"He has found this balance since a while. The same person that lives is the same one that plays and practice... he never needs to suit to the several situations he has."
