Andrew Gaff makes highly anticipated career call

Andrew Gaff has announced his highly anticipated career call, deciding to remain at the West Coast Eagles.

After much speculation surrounding his future, including a big money offer from North Melbourne, Gaff reportedly chose to turn the offer down for a pay cut.

The star winger has agonised over the big career choice but put months of indecision behind him on Sunday when he first informed the Roos he will stay in Perth.

The Eagles confirmed the move, although terms of a new contract are yet to be finalised, the club stating only that Gaff “would continue with the 2018 premiers in 2019 and beyond”.

The 26-year-old, who missed West Coast’s premiership triumph after copping an eight-game ban for punching Fremantle’s Angus Brayshaw, was out of contract and had been mulling a return to home state Victoria.

“I am very happy and I’m looking forward to building on the strong relationships that have been forged over the last eight years,” Gaff said.

“I want to be a part of team success. It was unfortunate that I could not be a part of the grand final, just as it was for Nic Naitanui and Brad Sheppard.

“We know there are no guarantees, but with the rest of the squad I will start pre-season with the aim of creating another opportunity.”

Gaff gave no indication which way he was leaning as late as Friday night when he addressed West Coast’s best-and-fairest count where he finished fifth despite playing 19 of a possible 25 games.

“Andrew had a lot to consider in making what was a complex decision and we couldn’t be happier that he has re-committed to the club and his teammates,” football chief Craig Vozzo said.

“He is a young man of exemplary character and is universally respected across all levels of our club.

“At 26 years of age, we feel his best footy is still ahead of him, which is exciting for everyone.”

Gaff’s decision is the latest in a string of near-misses for the Roos who have also been unsuccessful in luring Dustin Martin, Isaac Heeney, Adam Treloar, Josh Kelly and Jordan De Goey.
