Boxing world erupts as Devin Haney triumphs in judges 'robbery'

Devin Haney is still the undefeated and undisputed lightweight champion after a highly controversial points victory over boxing legend Vasily Lomachenko. The 24-year-old Haney was putting it all on the line against the veteran Lomachenko in a highly-anticipated clash at the MGM Grand Arena.

Haney caused sparks with a push at the ceremonial weigh-ins against the Ukrainian and the tension carried over to the fight with a boxing chess match between two incredibly gifted fighters. Despite boxing at home, the crowd roared for Lomachenko when he entered the ring with Haney receiving boos.

And every single round, bar round 11, was hard to score with Haney's precise power and body work judged against Lomachenko's volume and head-snapping straights. Heading into round 12 many viewers thought Lomachenko's work rate in the the championship rounds meant he was slightly ahead.

Haney dug deep in round 12 and scored the win on the judges scorecards. And the final round was the difference for two judges with Haney stunning the MGM Grand Arena crowd with a 116-112, 115-113 and a 115-113 unanimous decision.

Haney remains undefeated and was elated after the biggest victory of his career against a Future Hall of Famer. However, the crowd were less than pleased with boos ringing around the arena. Haney stepped up to speak, but the crowd let their feelings known during his triumph.

When the decision was put to Lomachenko, the Ukrainian remained classy in despair. "I don't want to talk about this. All people see what happened today," he said.

"I can't talk about this right now, it's just not a comfortable moment for me." Lightweight contender Shakur Stevenson jumped into the ring after the fight and claimed Lomachenko had won the fight.

And the boxing world erupted over the decision. Many fans were adamant Lomachenko won, while others were divided in the close decision.

In tough scenes, Lomachenko was caught in tears after losing such a close championship fight for all the lightweight belts. Backstage cameras caught Lomachenko breaking down in tough scenes to watch.

Haney stuck behind his jab in the first few rounds as he used his size and reach to try and keep Lomachenko at distance. The American surprised fans with his tactic to go towards the older fighters body throughout the fight.

While it appeared Haney was grabbing ascendency in the middle of the fight, Lomachenko dug deep and started to get on the inside of Haney. The Ukraine icon took over the fight with his footwork and straight left and rights stunning Haney on numerous occasions.

In the 10th round, Lomachenko appeared to rock Haney as he piled on the pressure. Haney then found his feet in the final round as he landed some devastating body shots and straight rights. Fans will be waiting to see what happens next for Lomachenko having lost his chance of becoming the undisputed lightweight champion at 35 years old.

Haney could be set for a monster showdown with Stevenson as the lightweight division continues to give fans the big showdowns.
