Allan Langer's gag towards Wayne Bennett about partner that shows character Broncos will miss
The Broncos legend is already being missed at training after moving away from his trainer role.
Allan Langer's absence at Broncos training is already being felt at the club with leading journalist Robbert Craddock revealing a hilarious story about his relationship with Wayne Bennett. The Broncos have started their ruthless pre-season training with players already suggesting the gruelling sessions they have undergone under new coach Michael Maguire.
Payne Haas already made a telling statement and claimed he is already seeing new standards at the Broncos at the start of Maguire's tenure, which will only fill fans with confidence. Reece Walsh also joined pre-season training early for the Broncos as the players rally around Maguire's new ethic of hard work.
But one major absence from training is that of Langer. The Broncos legend has been a mainstay for years as a head trainer at the club, often seen running around the background in his blue top. But after Kevin Walters' departure, Langer was moved into a new corporate role for the Broncos and won't feature at training or on game day. This will be a new sight for Broncos fans.
And Craddock has revealed how the absence of Langer's larrikin personality will be greatly felt at the Broncos, recalling a story about Langer's relationship with former Brisbane and Queensland coach Bennett. Langer was a halfback under Bennett during his time playing State of Origin for Queensland. Most recently he worked with Bennett as a trainer in the 2020 State of Origin camp.
And Craddock has revealed the special bond the pair had, which was an example of Langer's charisma at the club. This included one time where Langer joked around with Bennett after reports he was set to 'propose' to his former partner.
"The character and flavour he brought was absolutely unique. He was the only player that could ring Wayne Bennett at 3am in the morning and Wayne would never take offence. Why? because it was Alfie," Craddock said at Broncos training this week.
"There was a story in the paper about Wayne, perhaps getting married to his partner (at the time) Dale. Alfie turned up with a pillow and a ring on it and walked past Wayne's office. Anyone else, Wayne would take offence. But with Alfie he never did. That was the unique character of the guy and that is why he was so widely loved."
As the Broncos go old school for pre-season training, the club's greatest OG was a noticeable absentee for the first time in two decades.

Alfie Langer shuts down rumours over trainer role
After weeks of speculation over why he left the trainer role, with many reports suggesting it was due to close friend Walters' removal as head coach, Langer moved to quell the drama. Langer revealed he wasn't dirty at the club's decision and claimed he simply wanted a change of pace.
“After a long year, I just felt like I needed a change,” Langer said. “I went to see (CEO) Dave (Donaghy) and I explained that at this stage of my life and with the changes at the club, it was just the right time.
“It’s a new and exciting role. I’ve come to know a lot of the Broncos partners, corporates and members well over the last 30-plus years and catching up with them is something I’ve always really enjoyed. It will also give me more time to spend with Janine and the family and my grandkids in particular, which is important to me."
Donaghy said Langer will always be a part of the club and expressed his delight the 58-year-old hasn't walked away completely. “When Alf came to see me, I was only too happy to make this happen,” Donaghy said. “Alf is such a special person. Everyone knows him and everyone loves him, but better yet, he loves the Broncos just as much."
