Alex Ovechkin's chase of Wayne Gretzky's goal record on pause because of injury
Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin remains out with a fractured left fibula, pausing his chase of Wayne Gretzky's goal record, but he has resumed light skating on his own, according to reports.
Ovechkin had left a 6-2 victory against the Utah Hockey Club on Nov. 18 after absorbing a leg-on-leg collision and didn't return. The Capitals announced later that week that he was expected to miss four to six weeks.
Ovechkin, 39, entered this season needing 42 goals to break Hall of Famer Gretzky's NHL record of 894 career goals, which has stood since 1999. The Capitals star has 15 goals this season, including five in his last two games.
If Ovechkin doesn't reach the record this season, he has one more season left on his contract.
Here's where Ovechkin stands in his chase of Gretzky's goal record:

Ovechkin had two goals on three shots in the win against Utah before his injury. His first goal was a wrist shot from between the faceoff circles that beat goalie Connor Ingram in the first period.

It was Ovechkin's first career goal against Ingram, who became the 178th goalie that he has scored against. That ties Jaromir Jagr's NHL record.
Ovechkin scored again in the second period, with a one-timer from above the left faceoff circle.
But then he got hurt in the third period.

Alex Ovechkin injury update
Ovechkin was hurt after an accidental leg-on-leg hit from Utah's Jack McBain. The Capitals captain was slow to get to the bench. He tried to test out the leg during a TV timeout, but he wasn't able to return to the game.
The Capitals announced the fractured fibula and the timeline of four to six weeks out after he returned to Washington and was further evaluated by team doctors.
