Barry Hall in disgraceful on-field punches

Former AFL premiership captain Barry Hall has produced a disgraceful punch in the QAFL grand final in a situation eerily similar to his infamous 2008 incident involving Brent Staker.

Footage showed Hall, playing for Labrador against Palm Beach-Currumbin over the weekend, losing the ball in a tackle before being held by an opponent for less than two seconds.

He then swung a left arm at the opponent's face, sending him crashing to the floor.

As Palm Beach-Currumbin players checked on their teammate, one walked over to Hall to question the 40-year-old -- only for Hall to punch him as well.

Hall was set to retire from competitive football after the game but SEN reports he received a one-game ban for one hit and was cleared for the other.

While Labrador lost the grand final by 53 points, coach Aaron Shattock's unfortunate pre-match prediction of fireworks came true.

"Palmy got stuck into him last time, so it'll be interesting to see what happens on the weekend given there's no tomorrow," Shattock told AAP last week.

Shattock added that umpires had sometimes penalised Hall out of panic and that the former St Kilda, Sydney and Bulldogs player had "had to learn to temper his anger".

Hall appeared alongside former West Coast Eagles player Staker in an interview earlier this year to share that he still felt remorseful over the punch in round four, 2008.

Hall was handed a seven-game ban for the punch after being referred directly to the AFL tribunal.

"It was a confronting thing. You (Staker) shouldn’t have to deal with it a football player,’’ Hall said in June.

"I was going to say it was a one-off incident but it wasn’t. it is something that continually happened through my career.

"If I could take it back I certainly would. I apologised on the phone to (Staker) but if I could take it back I certainly would, a thousand times over.’’
