AFL great's stunning claim about 'exaggerating' Dangerfield

A hobbled Patrick Dangerfield overcame injury to help Geelong beat Hawthorn on Saturday, but AFL great Kane Cornes wasn't buying it.

Dangerfield managed to upstage Luke Hodge in his 300th AFL game to steer Geelong to a nailbiting three-point win over their arch-rivals.

The Brownlow Medallist's day appeared over in the first term when he was laid out in a fair bump from Jarryd Roughead and immediately put his hand in the air for a trainer.

He was rushed down the race but emerged shortly after with a severe limp.

While clearly hampered, Dangerfield returned and was sent forward, finishing with five goals including three third-term majors that gave Geelong their strongest buffer.

Fans and pundits heaped praise on Dangerfield's heroic efforts, but Port Adelaide great Cornes reckons we shouldn't be so quick with the plaudits.

Cornes has claimed Dangerfield has a habit of playing up his injuries, and did so on Saturday.

"He does exaggerate injuries," Cornes said on the Sunday Footy Show.

"In his time at Adelaide, his teammates had to sit him down and say, 'look, you do carry on a little bit with your injuries'."

Dangerfield is due to have scans on his injured leg but Cornes is predicting the Brownlow Medallist will be right to face the Crows next weekend.

"He does (carry on), so I'd be surprised if he missed with that injury yesterday," Cornes said.
