Australia's worst footy team recruits two AFL greats

The Nunawading Lions are without doubt the worst football team in Australia.

But despite losing every game by at least 30 goals, this weekend they reckon they're in with a chance - and they've recruited some AFL heavyweights to help.

"For those people who don't know me, I'm a god," Robert DiPierdomenico joked to the playing group.

'Dipper', a Brownlow medallist and five-time Hawthorn premiership player, is the Lions' coach this weekend.

"I am not used to losing, I'm not used to losing!" he told 7 News.

Nunawading's star midfielder on Saturday will be Carlton legend Anthony Koutoufides.

"I'm worried, I'm a bit worried now," he said with a smile.

"I think I'm going to have to kick about 15 goals to make it an even contest!"

That's because last season the Lions lost all 18 games with an average margin of 252 points.

Results have improved this season, losing all six games to date by just 193 points.

"Last week was our best result for the year," co-captain Marty Lambe said.

"We lost by just 140 points."

The eternal footy optimists genuinely believe Dipper and 'Kouta' can make the winning difference.

While these struggling Lions are here to learn from the legends, the legends say they're here to learn from them.

"To have this sort of turnout when the team's been obviously demoralised every week, it's fantastic," Koutoufides said.

"I'll be celebrating like the 1995 grand final! That was 22 years ago, so I'll have six weeks of enjoyment after that."

Co-captain Luke Brogdan said it would be "pandemonium" if the Lions were to win.

"It would be massive. It'd be a week off work," he said.
