Veteran Collingwood ruckman Mason Cox has taken a brutal swipe at Steven May after eye-opening remarks from the Demons defender during the AFL finals series. May raised eyebrows around the footy world after claiming his side was "much better” than Collingwood and "should have smoked" the premiers in their Qualifying Final.

The Demons star made the bold claims at the club's awards night in October and was clearly frustrated by the loss to the eventual premiers. The Demons then lost to Carlton the following week to bow out of the AFL finals in straight sets for the second year in a row.

In contrast, Collingwood finished the year on top of the ladder and considered by most to be the best side all season, with their victory over the Brisbane Lions in the grand final testament to that. It was a fact Cox was happy to remind May about after taking aim at the Demons defender's suggestion that they are a better team than the Magpies.

“I find it hilarious,” Cox told Fox Footy about May's bold claims. “I don’t know how many drinks he had at that little celebration of not making it to the grand final but they lost to Carlton after losing to us, so I don’t know exactly what he’s getting at there.

“Melbourne’s had its media time over the last couple of months and you’ve definitely seen a few things over the time but they’re still going to be one of the best teams in the league next year and one you’ve always got to respect. They’ve always put up a big fight with us as you saw in the Queens Birthday game last year and they came close to beating us in that quarter final, they’re a good team and you’ve got respect them.

“Those type of comments are water off a ducks back really, people are always going to sit there and say they think they can beat the best and that’s just part of the experience I think. When it comes down to it, like Jordy (De Goey) said, we’re the ones with the medal on our neck so that’s the proof in the pudding."

Cox admits he's partial to a bit of trash-talk and says he expects some fireworks out in the middle when the Magpies and Demons square off next season. “It’s interesting to hear those type of comments and I’m sure whatever round we play them next year there’s going to be a bit of action in the competition of the fight... I love the trash talk, I’m all for it, you best believe if I go in that forward line and Steven May lines up next to me, there’ll be a few comments made."

Collingwood's Jordan de Goey also echoed Cox's sentiments after being asked about May's comments on Channel Nine in October. “I just think the proof‘s in the pudding," de Goey said.

"I guess I‘m the one with the medal around my neck at the moment, so that’s all I can really say. It‘s going to be interesting next year after (him) saying that, isn’t it?"
