'Haven't missed him': GWS Giants boss takes shot at Magpies star

Greater Western Sydney chief executive Dave Matthews has taken a cheeky shot at former Giant Adam Treloar, saying the club ‘hasn’t missed him’.

The Giants boss, appearing on Fox Sports’ In The Game podcast, had been asked about the future of star midfielder Stephen Coniglio, who has been linked to a move away from the club at season’s end.

Treloar, who signed with Collingwood in 2015 after starting his career with the Giants, said earlier this week that Coniglio would find it “hard to turn down” offers from other clubs outside Sydney.

Clearly, Matthews took exception to the remarks, referring to Treloar’s departure from the Giants as a ‘disappointing time in our history’.

At the time, Treloar had been linked to a move to Richmond, before eventually deciding on the Magpies after they hired former GWS football operations boss Graeme ‘Gubby’ Allen.

“When you lose your footy manager and a player who is indicating that he wants to stay, and then talks about going to Richmond, and then ends up at Collingwood with your footy manager, it was an unusual set of circumstances,” Matthews said on the podcast.

“I hasten to add that I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Gubby Allan, huge respect for what he’s been able to do and again he brought great resilience in spades to our club.

“And he brought success to our club.

“That was just probably a disappointing period in our club’s history.

“You would’ve loved to have been able to hold Treloar, but in saying that I don’t think we’ve missed him too much.”

Magpies star Dayne Beams out indefinitely

Collingwood's Dayne Beams is taking an indefinite break from the AFL to focus on his mental health, the star midfielder intent on regathering himself after a difficult year.

Beams has said he will not return until he has dealt with his mental health issues, but is confident he can again dedicate himself to the sport.

The 29-year-old stepped down as captain of the Brisbane Lions last year as he struggled to come to terms with the death of his father in March.

"I have been on the record in the past about the battles I have fought," Beams said in a club statement released on Wednesday.

"Right now, I need to step away and regather myself.

"I hope people will understand that this is something I need to do for myself and, importantly, my family.

"Our wellbeing is the highest priority."
