'Should never happen': AFL world stunned by confronting scenes

The AFL's concussion protocols were once again thrust into the spotlight after Collingwood's Chris Mayne refused to be taken from the field by Magpies club doctors for a concussion test during Thursday night's loss to Brisbane.

Mayne lay face down on the turf for several moments after colliding with Lions rival Charlie Cameron, with the Brisbane forward showing concern for the Pies defender immediately after the bump.

Doctors immediately came onto the ground to attend to Maybe, but the 232-game veteran, who was on his feet by this point, waved them away and gestured to the umpire to hand him the ball so he could take his free kick.

He was eventually brought from the field, where he then continued to argue with club doctors for a further couple of minutes before eventually caving in to undergo a head injury assessment.

Mayne was cleared and allowed back into play soon after, but his refusal to come from the field quickly, under advice from the club's doctors, was of concern to commentators.

Former Geelong premiership star Cameron Ling said it was unacceptable that Mayne didn't heed the doctor's instructions.

“The doctor has to take over there,” Ling said.

“That is one argument that should never ever be won by the player.”

Fellow commentator Brian Taylor agree, telling the Channel 7 broadcast it was an 'amazing' scene.

“That is amazing, because he spent another couple of minutes on the ground after he was asked to come off.”

ABC Sport producer Roger Oldridge shared an image of Mayne in conversation with the club's doctors before he eventually relented.

Zac Bailey lived out the classic childhood dream, kicking a goal after the siren to hand Brisbane a one-point AFL win over Collingwood and end their week of adversity on a high note.

The Lions had been 0-2 heading into Thursday's clash and trailed by 25 points in the second quarter before fighting back to prevail 11.7 (73) to 11.6 (72).

Bailey had been on the losing end of a crunch moment six days earlier when he was denied a late holding-the-ball free kick against Geelong's Mark Blicavs.

But when Daniel Rich speared the ball to a leading Bailey with 25 seconds to go on Thursday night, the running defender seized the moment to kickstart Brisbane's season.

"I couldn't look - and I reckon my mum would have been at home saying her Hail Marys that the ball went through," coach Chris Fagan said.

"But with Zac - with the ball in his hands, he's actually quite a cool customer, so I'm not surprised that he kicked it through.

"A great moment for him in his football life and a great moment for our footy club, fortunately."

The victory was a testament to the Lions' character after they had to remain in Victoria following last Friday's loss to Geelong amid a coronavirus outbreak in Brisbane.

It forced the game to be switched from the Gabba to Marvel Stadium.

The Lions will stay in Victoria for now and travel to Ballarat next Wednesday ahead of their round four clash with the Western Bulldogs at Mars Stadium.
