Former AFL players Kane Cornes and Nathan Buckley have butted heads over whether or not Collingwood youngster Jack Ginnivan's celebrations on Friday night went too far.

The 19-year-old Magpie, fresh from defeating St Kilda in the first match of the season, was handed a camera by club officials to film some of the aftermath of the match.

In the video, Ginnivan describes the win as 'light work' and 'the first of many' - comments which drew the ire of Cornes considering it was the sixth game of the 19-year-old's AFL career.

Cornes said it was much too soon in Ginnivan's career for him to be describing any AFL win as 'light work' particularly considering the season from hell Collingwood endured in 2021.

The former Port Adelaide premiership player said a round one win over the mercurial Saints was nothing to write home about.

“They finished 17th last year. You’ve beaten St Kilda, who no one expects will do anything this year, stop carrying on,” he told Channel 9's Sunday Footy Show.

“That’s Jack Ginnivan, you’ve played six games. Just relax. Earn some respect in the game before you go on carrying on like that.

“You don’t see Geelong carrying on like that. You don’t see Richmond and dynasty teams carry on like that. Earn some respect before you start carrying on like that, saying it was ‘light work’ and ‘the first of many’.

"There’s a thing about winning in a humble way.”

However former Collingwood coach Buckley, who stepped down mid-way through last season, cheekily suggested Cornes had needed material to fill his segment.

While he admitted he wasn't a big fan of Ginnivan's celebration, Buckley took a playful jab at Cornes' expense.

“Kane’s got a segment he needs to fill so he’s got to find something that he’s not happy about,” Buckley told SEN Breakfast on Monday morning.

“The volcano needs to happen apparently.”

Nathan Buckley backs Magpies young gun amid criticism

Ginnivan booted two goals from 10 touches against the Saints on Friday night to get his own season started on a high note.

Despite the criticism from Cornes, Buckley said the Magpies were starting to move in a new direction under new coach Craig McRae, and that allowing 'personalities' to flourish was key to that.

Admitting he had 'a little bit of a problem' with the manner in which Ginnivan celebrated, Buckley said it was simply one of those things that would likelt be resolved with a brief discussion during the week.

“No, I loved the personality. You’ve got to embrace it and from what I can gather, Fly (McRae) is big on that as well," Buckley said.

"Especially with young guys coming in there. You’ve just got to let them go.

“They’ll get whacked on the head and dust themselves off and go again. They are brash, a little bit over the top at times, and will have emotional reactions that aren’t as regulated as senior leaders.

"Let’s just see it for what it is.”

It was an ideal start to the season for McRae, who also welcomed controversial star Jordan de Goey back into the lineup after his arrest in New York during the off-season.

De Goey received muted jeers from the stands whenever he went near the ball on Friday night.

But the explosive star let his foot

ball do the talking, racking up 27 disposals and five clearances, as well as two important second-half goals.

It was a crucial contribution in the Magpies' 15.12 (102) to 12.13 (85) win at Marvel Stadium in McRae's first game in charge.
